DStv DVB over IP solution will transform the broadcasting landscape

Not as simple as that...

I have to agree, the middle man is their bet bet at the moment of getting their content to the public. I see satellite dishes in remote areas, I just don't see the same households streaming the channels direct from BBC and the like. Explaining IP addresses to the country would take some doing..

Any indication on costs? Im building a student flat complex next year, with about 30 flats, have been looking into this as a way to reduce the per user subscription fee.

It won't be feasible for 30 student flats. Maybe 30 Clifton beachfront apartments... It's a few hundred grand for the IPTV head-end. So only feasible for big complexes and hotels.

Are u sure? Their website have the launch for aparemtment building version as Q3 2010. They also have digital distribution for hotels on there, dont know if that IPTV though. But their subscriptions seem quite reasonable for the likes of retirement villages and hotels. R153 per TV. But no cost on installation listed though, so guess that could be quite expensive. Then analog is still beter, just hook a few decoder and put through the important channels.

I'm talking about equipment costs. If the IPTV head-end costs are shared by a hundreds of houses in a gated community which will have a fibre network anyway, then it becomes a very good option. Especially as other IP services can be added on the same network. One network does everything. Subscription costs are exactly the same as normal decoders..

Sorry yes i got off point there. I just cant see the advantage of this if thats the costs. It will have very limited application. The one i was referring to is this:
http://www.dstv.com/dstvsa/content/en/commercial_sales_digital
But i think thats possibly still a satellite dish for each decoder.

Too bad about the cost though, would have liked to implement IPTV, we have to network everything anyway, with standard cabling though not fibre. But hiding away a few quad lnb dishes still seems the better option then.

I can just see the complaints coming in if their internet link is down or slow. You won't be able to watch TV if the internet is down, or at least change channels.
Actually, this system has nothing to do with the internet, since the data is received via a dish as per normal. It is then streamed via IP, but on a separate network that has nothing to do with the internet. TV via internet will be possible when bandwidth and usage caps increase.

Doesn't matter how the signal gets to your tv it will still be the same junk channels and more repeats.

=/ Yap, F* multichoice. Just eating our hard earned money and giving us lame promises. From TV to Internet...to Cell-Phones, we get screwed.

Got a quote, not viable for small installations
DVB over IP with dish, installation and server Cost R270K excl VAT
UEC DVB over IP STBs @ R1 799 excl. VAT.

R270k? WTF?!

As I see it, all they would need is a Dish with dual LNB (maybe quad?), a server with an appropriate number of DVB-S cards to receive the streams from the dish, and simply rebroadcast it over the network using multicast streams.

The IP STB would then subscribe to the appropriate channel, and use the onboard SIM to decrypt the stream, displaying it to the subscriber.

If the R270K included full rewiring of a 500 room hotel for Cat6, perhaps. Otherwise, I reckon they're taking the piss.

R270k??? seriously?

And Multichoice want this to be the future? please...

And those IP STB's.. are they PVR's with watch 1, record 2 functionality? If not, then what is the incentive for me as a consumer to use this, when for R1500 I can get an HDPVR and for an extra R1k (give or take) i can get a dish installed.

Fell on my back when I got the quote from the authorized installers - totally unreal
