DStv Explora 3 - New decoder to replace the Explora 2

Yeah, they're missing out on life while they stare in shock and disbelief at their monthly invoice from Monochoice. Anyway, there are billions of far better things to do other than watch TV.
QFT.

That particular piece of wisdom only comes with age it seems.

Being a techie and a 1st-generation gamer, I used to dream about having a TV/PC in every room of the house.

Luckily I realized the flaw in that particular plan before I was too old to still enjoy what life I had left the real world.

Spending your limited time staring at a screen for 14 hours a day is a tragedy.

Not saying to not watch TV/ play games at all, but as with everything else it must be balanced out with activities that matter.

This is a downgraded model. The 1st explora was the best
You could watch 2 different channels. They taken away the display which useful and made setup complicated. What a downgrade instead of improving user experience. Monochoice is fooling the customers

not so, the Exolpra 1 is a view 1, record 1 device

nope none of the explorers allowed that actually none of the HD decoders allowed that
only the original SD PVR and original non PVR dual view are ones that allowed that.

ok i know there are options other than DSTV.

So if you like live rugby, cricket, series and movies what is the best budget option out there.
Netflix + basic dstv option ?

Basic DSTV doesn't have live rugby or cricket.

New dstv decoders are dog crap, buttons are unresponsive and slow menu, multichoice takes sweepers and give them lots of handouts at the expense of all subscribers, we pay high premiums to support handouts and crappy workmanship, move production of dstv decoders to China, they will do a billion times better job,

Sorry I am referring to non PVR that was dual view. Approximately 5 years ago I had to give my old dual view decoder in for new PVR which I thought was an upgrade but only upgrade was build in harddrive which I hardly needed due to repeats

Here is a much more meaningful comparison for all of you to chew on.

The real departure is that it is the first PVR decoder released by MC that cannot distribute RF directly, which for some is just unacceptable. It requires an external RF remodulator to truly be a replacement for the earlier models.

The 3A is less power hungry than the previous decoders.
The LMX 502Z LNB ( Low Noise Block downconverter) does NOT have any universal ports on it and MC have been very secretive about its "hidden" capabilities. Generally, you require a special FSM to set it up, hence why they harp on the use of an installer. There is however a way to get it to default to a Universal LNB for line up with an older FSM. It has only two ports and can only support two decoders in what is now called "UniView" (UV).

Further, the 3A decoder may also require an external diplexer IF it is purchased as a replacement in an existing "XtraView" (XV) installation.

It was also the first decoder to introduce the so-called "Installation Wizard" for initial setup, that comes with its own set of issues. The older Explora models and the 4- and 5-series HD decoders also now have this rather clumsy "Installation Wizard" installed.

While the 3A supports "relay commands" through the Unicable port, neither the SLNB models nor the 24-1Z switch allows the relay of remote commands for tvLINKS. Therefore, IF you want to replace an existing decoder in an existing installation, where remote control of the decoders is used, you have to "extract/insert" the relayed commands via an external diplexer, or change to remote blasters. In the end, an installation becomes far more "messy" with all these external bits and pieces and PSUs and cable clutter than the older decoders.

All in all, at the end of the day, a retrogressive move downwards in quality and reliability, despite the claims otherwise.
