DStv Explora HD PVR decoder now available

According to MultiChoice, subscribers willing to put up the ±R2,500 for the new decoder can expect the following new features:
  • BUGS
  • MORE BUGS
  • EVEN MORE BUGS
  • Disabled USB
  • Disabled Ethernet

The existing HD-4P PVR is the most buggy consumer product I ever had the misfortune of owning.
Features like USB, SATA, Ethernet are still disabled on the 4P decoders.
The HD-PVR is s-l-o-w.
Rewind, pause, fast-forward take ages to respond.
The HD-PVR uses an unusually high amount of electricity (Eskom should investigate).

No it's not my device or installation, lots of people have the same issues with the 4P,4U,2P,2U decoders.
See the forums for details.

Why should anyone trust DSTV to make a better product?
Why should anyone trust DSTV to enable Ethernet, USB?
Why should anyone trust DSTV to fix bugs in the firmware?

They can't even fix the exiting HD-PVR, so what's changed?

I was going to sell my SDPVR and use the money to buy one of these today. But I will wait for reviews first to make sure this thing isn't a lemon like the 4 tuner HD decoder....

For now my SDPVR and 2P HD can carry on heartbeating.....

The entire software platform has changed, it's no longer written by external companies , it's now all controlled and written by MC in house

I might buy one today, I will most definitely not use the PVR functionality.

The only reason why I am buying a new decoder is because I want HD quality, I noticed that it is not 1080p.

So...is the explora worth it?

I was going to rush out and buy one when it launched, but I have decided to wait until pricing comes down and stick withmy current P2 HD PVR....

I just don't see enough features on the Explora to warrant R2500 outlay

You should still be able to get a 2P or the old Pace for like R1300 from some shops, that is much better value than the Explora atm
