Why the heck should MC get ready for 4K resolutions??!?!? Besides the fact that you would need a MONSTER size screen to actually take advantage of all that detail. BTW, most of the cinemas out there aren't even equipped to display a 4K image, they currently do 2K. Is there anybody you know with 200" and above screens in their home?

Suggesting that MC must get it's act together and prepare for 4K now, thats like saying: "BMW must prepare for cold-fusion driven engines now!!" even before they have a viable electric/hybrid/hydrogen solution. Tell me another one please.

Almost forgot, the next big thing is supposedly digital distribution of HD content using the Internet. If 90% of the planet is not ready (in terms of infrastructure and connectivity to the home) for this model, even using highly compressed 1080p/720p content, what are consumers going to need to enjoy 4K at home via the Internet?? A dedicated Seacom landing site on their front stoep??
Do you know that 4K projectors need 4-5 DVI cables as input from the video processor to display 4K?? You're gonna need a friggin's SAN with hundred's of TB's of storage just to store these files, for starters. 100TB HDD's can't come soon enough!!

What MC need to do is introduce better HD content, more HD dedicated channels and up their bit-rate. Some content currently looks like upscaled SD, while their Sports content is pretty impressive.

Guys, don't be silly, we want 1080p because it's available. :)

I think DSTV might have more problems getting hold of hd content to broadcast. I mean, was some of the older movies they broadcast even filmed in hd? I'm sure we'll see a steady incline of channels displaying in HD, hopefully we get Discovery HD. THAT WOULD BE AWESOME!

I can't believe the amount of negative posts! Do your homework and you will find the DSTV service is right up there in terms of content and cost compared to Europe. 720P is superior to 1080i especially for sport and action (progressive vs interlaced). Sorry to disapoint, new HD content only here this time next year. Good news is that there will be no extra cost. My biggest gripe is the poor quality SD on sports channels. Some SD content is as good as a DVD so so should be possible to watch soccer, rugby etc without bad ghosting around the players! I would love all programs to be in HD as much as the anyone. HD is not as advanced in Europe as some may think, just got back from a trip.

Perhaps some straight shooting from them will better explain their dilemma. Pity that if they do, they'll get blasted for charging R500(+R55) for a incapable payTV service...
Incapable Pay TV service ?

DSTV is the most professional and capable PayTV Service we have, easily comparable to international standards.

This is the typical ignorant South African whining/complaining/bitching/negetive attitude that plagues our nation.
Why make such an incorrect statement?Do you just like moaning for the hell of it ?

Dont give a hoot about MC HD - wont buy the ridiculously expensive PVR on principal.

Does anyone know if HD or HD Ready will be broadcast on Terrestrial DTV?

Terrestrial HD DTV seems to be the normal standard now, elsewhere in the world.

Really? Wow! Give me a few links to DTT service providers with HD programming... It is far from the normal standard.

Yea, cant they give us SS3, and both the mm channels along with mnet all in HD?
I assume it requires a big bandwidth upgrade there side, but that will make it worth the switch to HD... currently not worth switching for 1 channel. :\
SS3? FTW?!

Thats like saying our sun is the best sun we have.... WE ONLY HAVE ONE CHOICE

of course dstv is the best, what other payTV service you comparing them to [and if you say SABC, i'm going to make you stand in the silly corner], thus, they are also the worst payTV service we have...

Sure. They have some HD channels available, but that does not make it "the normal standard"...
It does if you have a choice to select the channel, from the in buit digital tuner on your TV or cheap set top box (about a 10th of the the price of MC's PVR)
BTW, Every new TV in Australia has a digital tuner.

edit: Also ALL of Australia's 5 main TV Stations, have a HD channel.

And you can watch Full HD 1080p Formula 1 on a free channel, live.

As usual, all this cash is for technology that will be obsolete as soon as dual view HD comes along. Overseas HD PVR decoders go for as little as US$100. Where do they come up with these prices?

I suppose we don't get Dolby 5.1 because most viewers only listen in Mono?

dont really see the point in broadcasting in 1080p, 720p is more than adequate. Guys are just being picky, can you imagine what they need to broadcast that signal at? terabytes per sec!

my grip with DSTV is the decoder, lol, I know it will never ever happen, but I'd like for each channel to be independent on the TV.
