If you pay +- R3500 for a dstv hd decoder, while on the On digital media website it says that we'd be paying approximitly R400 for a hd decoder, Iam I missing something or is m-choice hd decoder way over priced, right can some clarify this or are ppl being ripped off bigtime.

On digital media website they say that we'd be paying R400 for a hd decoder

Link and quote please. I cannot find this on their website - although it is lacking in content and is not up to date at all:

http://www.ondigitalmedia.co.za/

With the ODM offering comprising a healthy balance of local and international content, this service will be available from the second half of 2008.

This now puts us in a position to proceed with the development of our business model and to launch in the second half of 2009.

Does not instil much faith when they cannot get such a simple marketing exercise correct...

My bad were'nt paying attention, is there any substitute for m-choice's hd decoder.

Hello Superior.

No there isn't, not at this stage. and the decoder is R2499, not R3500 as you stated.

ON digital isn't. That's the main difference, so were stuck with what's available, unless you import one like a Topfield.

1 - Please spell properly - it's frustrating having to decipher mxit language.
2 - What did you get wrong? Please substantiate what you say and clarify what you're stating was a mistake.

Allow me to translate:
The ON Digital decoder is reportedly much cheaper than the DSTV one, so are we being ripped off?

Well firstly we would like clarity on WHERE this pricing for the ON Digital decoder is coming from.

Secondly, is the ON Digital HD Decoder a PVR or just a standard decoder?

Ok Found it on their website....

They state on the front page that their decoders will be HD compliant. THen on the FAQS page they state a launch price of approximately R400.

This would be inline if DSTV were to launch an MPEG4 compliant standard non-pvr decoder and my guess it would be in a similar price bracket.

And then goes on to say "Actually I completely made that schit up. But seeing as I have your attention, is there an alternative to Multichoice's HD-Decoder?"

Sounds like another "GTS" type company.

They're gonna broadcast in SD initially with HD as an afterthought. Yay, yet another company stuck in the ice ages.

So why dont multichoice give us a standard hd decoder.

Because there is not enough of a market for it at this point in time.

good question, but a pvr is so much nicer to have then taping shows or recording on dvd.

So why dont multichoice give us a standard hd decoder.
That is the million dollar question.

But judging from the millions of complaints on the DStv forum, I doubt they'd release a non-PVR HD decoder when the current PVR version is littered with bugs.

There's a newer HD PVR that's supposedly going to be launched in February (made by UEC) with a faster processor but I doubt that'll be cheaper or faster than current one, sh|t software stays sh|t even on fast hardware.

There is also of course the complication that they have to make a decoder that is able to decode Mpeg2 and Mpeg4 streams, which ODM won't have since they'll start broadcasting in Mpeg4... I'm not saying it'll add much cost, but it does add a level of complexity and Multichoice are not known for handling complexity v well.
