Dstv hd pvr ripoff posible

I've seen the PVR at about R3200 ... I thought R2499 was only the launch price and the non-promo price was R3000+?
 
Its still at Makro for R2499... so yeah thats the price I reckon its selling for...

meikyo : 95% of the stuff on that satellite is useless to me.. its in the wrong language or its stuff that Dstv already broadcast.

Are you sure that ODM will be using Sirius 4?... hmm?
 
I saw the ad yesterday on dstv hdpvr single view decoder R3500.
 
Well that in and of itself pretty much answers your question...

Notice.. its called a HDPVR whereas ODM's is not a PVR. Plus the HD-PVR can record two channels at once...
 
Nice to see that the Sirius 4 satellite is to be used primarily for Africa /sarcasm off

And I somehow think that until ODM have actually launched properly, we will not know what Satellite they're going to use. That article is more than a year old now.
 
Is there any way to contact odm, excluding email-ing them to death.

Do you think any of us care?... They're vapourware like every other damn pay-tv service that we're supposed to have.

Plus they're aiming at a different market segment to the one that I'm in, so they'll need to have a damn good offering to entice me to pay them any money.
 
True, but I will gladly put dstv on hold for a month or two or forever, if I had some choice of some other crap on the telly.

Most of them are in English,only the ads are in the wrong language.Those are Nordic and Europe broadcasts from the old Sirius 2/3.

Yes ODM will use Sirius 4.The sat's owner (SES) got a 20% in ODM.There's HD broadcasts already on it,Where Dstv buy HD content,ODM can start by just rebroadcast some hd channelS.

A lot of those "dstv stuff" you will see of course,but you can mix it with the channels you want.

Those screens in Game,Spar,Tops are also a broadcast via Sirius 4.

Judging by the many rants about dstv i doubt that's a usable feature.:)
 
Buying a hd pvr is at this point in time useless and for quite some time in future , with only 1 hd channel with repeats of movies; no thanx , all you have to do is get extra view (the cheapest decoder ) and pvr via pc.

Just before Christmas the HDPVR went up to R3699.00 @ Makro , Hi Fi Corp, House & Home & P'nP Hypermarkerts, the decoders came down again a week before Christmas to R2499.00 and has not reverted back yet.
 
Well considering the fact that I actually own an HD PVR the recording 2 channels at once has been a very usable feature for me thank you very much.

And as for SES owning 20% of ODM, that doesn't mean they can just tap into the signals they're broadcasting for other clients. They will need to secure distribution rights with the original rights holders, and for South Africa, I have a feeling Multichoice have tied those guys up with exclusive rights deals for a good few years to come.
 
For now yes,wait untill the "wow factor" is gone.

As for the exclusive rights issue,a couple of HD series and movies hardly cover all the hd content out there.For hd to be a viable option you need content more than that.Whether ODM will deliver i don't know but Sirius 4 already provides the platform,Pas 7 don't.

I've had a HD PVR since launch day.... the wow factor lasted about 2 weeks.. now the ability to record 2 shows on 2 diff channels actually is pretty useful to me...

And I'm not talking HD content specifically.. If Multichoice did their deals the way I expected them to... they got exclusive rights on a show, whether is SD or HD or whatever... The only ppl who can "broadcast" it in SA for a period of time is Multichoice.

Relax dude

So you find it usefull.Good.But if you look at all the rants here and on their forum is doesn't look like it's usable to many.

THeir exclusive shows are not the alfa and omega of tv.For you it is cool,as for many others i agree,but there is life after dstv.Since many download most of their exclusive shows anyway,i doubt there much too loose for many people,if they jump ship.

I just take exception when people attack a company based on an opinion that has no basis in actually TRYING a feature, just on how they think it'll work.

As for their exclusive shows, thats not really what I'm talking about.

I'm talking more along the lines of Multichoice have signed content distribution deals with Viacom/BBC/NBC etc etc... that give them exlcusive license to distribute those companies content in South Africa via a broadcast medium
