A satellite broadcast signal is split into hi & lo band each with vertical & horizontal polarisation, giving four possible feeds from the LNB. The tuner(s) in the decoder tells the LNB which one of the four it needs by voltage switching and frequency tones. The HD PVR has four tuners and each one needs independent access to a LNB receiver, hence the need for a quad LNB (which has four receivers built in) and four coaxes.
However, DSTV use only the Lo band on PAS 7/10 but uses both horizontal and vertical polarisation feeds. That means that each decoder tuner need only access one of two feeds - either vert or horiz. So, for now, if you have a twin LNB (required for the SD PVR), you can buy a multiswitch which will provide four outputs from the two coax feeds (instead of fitting a new quad LNB). This is not a splitter - it intercepts the decoder instructions to the LNB and connects the tuner to either the vert or horiz signal as it needs them.
These multiswitches come in many forms. If you want to have a HD PVR by itself you need a "2 in 4 out" multiswitch. If you want to use a HD PVR and a SD PVR together (Xtraview) you'll need a "2 in 6 out" multiswitch. I understand Ellies will have these at about the same time the HD PVR's hit the stores.
These multiswitches reduce the signal by about 4dB (just more than half) so if your signal is marginal, then you will see some impact especially when there is bad weather.
