Just came across and article of Sky's new set top box. Highly impressive compared to what we get here in SA

Sky has launched the Sky Q platform, including two set-top boxes, a mobile app and a new broadband hub. The 4K-ready Sky Q Silver is the flagship offering, and comes with twelve TV tuners that allow you to record four TV shows simultaneously. The Q Silver also offers 2TB of on-board storage, and you can watch recorded content on up to three TVs and two tablets at the same time.

The Sky Q Mini box was also announced, which can be used to stream content wirelessly from the Q Silver. Sky's set-top boxes will be able to double up as Wi-Fi hotspots through the Sky Q hub, ensuring seamless connectivity throughout your house. Here's the breakdown of what's on offer with the Sky Q platform:

Watch shows from your box, whether live, recorded or on demand, anywhere around the home on another TV or tablet

Pause viewing on one TV screen and pick up where you left off in another room

For the first time, take your favourite shows with you by saving recordings onto your tablet to watch anywhere

Watch different programmes on up to five screens simultaneously while also recording four other channels

Supercharge your Sky Broadband by turning all your Sky Q boxes into Wi-Fi hotspots

Scroll and swipe the new touchpad remote to choose what to watch on an all-new TV guide

Use the powerful search capability of Sky Q to find everything related to a show

Access an even wider range of entertainment on the big screen including YouTube, Vevo and the best of the web

Browse your Facebook photos and stream music wirelessly using Bluetooth or Apple's AirPlay

Also new is a Bluetooth-enabled remote with a circular touchpad that's compatible with voice commands. Sky has mentioned that the Sky Q app will launch alongside the new set-top boxes in early 2016, which is when 4K content from the provider is also set to go live.

Well, they already enjoy much better decoders/"DVRs" than we have. A friend of mine in the US told me they have something like six buffered channels (the last six you have been watching) and you can jump back ~6hours in each buffered channel. On top of that, they have on demand, multiple recording tuners (no scheduling conflicts), lots of recording space and internet streaming.

Can't remember which cable provider they were using though...

The best part is that it probably costs 40 pounds for sky, speak and surf. That's TV, internet and home lines.

Between dstv and telkom here that same service costs like 2k.

Not quite.

I had Sky until 2014. The full package without HD was 57 pounds. HD was another 10 I think. Then there were a fee other options for a few pounds each.

Not sure of current prices but at the time 67 pounds x 20 is quite a bit more than DSTV in ZAR.

Content differences can be debated. Also some repeats.

And no , I don't have DSTV here mainly for cost reasons ( the little tv I watch I download or stream ).

The price is internet, tv and telephone plus way better tv?

nope , just TV

I was outside the UK so couldn't make use of the other services

But if I recall the Internet offers seemed to be quite good , although it was usually very low price for 3 months and them moving up substantially. Cant recall exact numbers

Just did a search on Sky

Took the full package , HD , sport etc etc with unlimited internet ( speed up to 17mbps )

Monthly cost now 85 pounds , after 12 months its 109
Plus 17,40 pounds line rental

So you looking at over R2000 per month to start of with. Yes the box is better. Programme quality - I guess it all depends

Roughly , DSTV is R900 ( ?? I don't have DSTV ) , plus about a grand for line rental and decent internet , sounds about the same.

The above excludes comparisons versus disposable income etc

Actually I will even settle for ANYTHING that just works properly, never mind these cool new things, I just want something that actually pauses when you click pause and that can fast forward all the way through a recorded show. Heck, even just any reaction when you press a button would be great.

I also have this view.

Most people say that the prices for TV and internet is cheaper in the UK. Not really. If you genuinely compare the average consumer's speed and price, it is sort of the same.
