DSTV maybe in for stiff competition

funny how everyone is "anti-telkom" yet when they mention starting something similar to DSTV everybody gets excited :D

Exposing Multichoice to competition is a good thing, even if that competition comes in the form of Telkom.
Telkom's traditional revenue streams are under pressure, so the government needs to find some greener pastures for its cash cow.

I'm still anti telkom - I'm just more anti-monochoice. :)

Lekker nou gaan DSTV bietjie afk@k. I'm sick of paying this high price for my DSTV subscription and not being able to choose which channels I actually want to pay for. Hope it will change with this new competition. I want to be able to choose damnit!

DSTV sucks giant salticrax. My wife and I got so tired of reruns that we gave DSTV the finger. Now with SABC3 and Etv we are hardly ever subjected to reruns. SABC is actually not as bad as it used to be.

The massive price tag on their monthly subscription and the unrelenting frequency of their louder than need-be advertisements mad us cancel our subscription. Sadly few South Africans will vote with their feet unless real competition comes about.

Very True!!!!!!, but they actually don't even vote with their feet when other options are available, bank charges being a example.

I don't think Telkom will make it much cheaper but Ip tv might offer greater choice. I just hope they have a decently priced pay-per-veiw else if it costs as much as hiring a movie + petrol it ain't gonna be worth it for alot.

Etv has reruns.. armageddon is coming on again..

Sure, but they certainly do not re-run the same movie 6 - 20 times in a single month

Yup, multichoice is far to cosy. They not only rerun movies to the nth degree on various movie channels, but they also now screen short stories / drama's on 'movie' channels, not to mention local crap.
Reason I pay Multichoice is to avoid being exposed to most of that rubbish that is aired on etv and sabpuke.

all this is making me so happy telkom and dstv are under pressure.. Were moving in the right direction! finally after 10 yrs. Monochoice (as someone here quite elegantly put it :D) sucks far more than telkom and i hope they rot in hell!!!

Competition will make ZERO difference to DSTV- until they unbundle Supersports investments in Rugby and Soccer.....

Anyone interested in taking DSTV to the competition comission? I would like to see how feasible that would be and would need input from a few parties.

stix has hit the nail on the head: Supersport managed to wangle exclusivity to 2 of the three prime time sports in South Africa (rugby & cricket), as well as exclusivity on various other special interest sports (like Golf, Tennis, etc). Until this exclusivity is challenged in a competition court, few people will leave multichoice.

telkom competing with dstv could be good.telkom is good a milking the cash cow!

Baseball season will be over soon and the Springbok's dont win often enough to justify DSTV so I'll switch :p

Not Anti-Telkom. Very much Anti-Telkom's Monopoly.

Telkom behaves like any corporate would do if some utterly insane government gave them protection from market forces. Corporations are motivated by profit. Nothing else. They don't care about you, the environment, the poor, the springboks or anything else. they are not proudly South African, American, Christain, Jewish, black or white. Probably because they are (effectively) owned and controled by extremely rich people who only care about their own well being.

Anyone who tells you any different is trying to sell you something.

I will also be happy to see some competition for Multichoice.

I have been a multichoice subscriber for more than 7 years. Currently it looks like they do not have interesting programming.

One example is the new "Survivor" series. I do not like SABC and Telkom either.

I've avoided MultiChoice/DSTV because of their restrictive options. It's really quite easy to get my business. Give me -> Cartoon Network, Series Channel, History Channel, Action-X, M-Net (for Smallville / CSI), Movie Magic 1 or 2 (doesn't matter which as they repeat the same stuff anyway), HBC for the inlaws and BBC-Prime for not more than R150-R200 per month. I'm not prepared to spend more as my time is limited and there's only so many channels I want to record shows in order to skip through the blasted commercials.

Now whomever comes up with this package will get my business. Who's up for the challenge? :D

I don't like Mutichoice either

My favourite chanels are History, National Geographic and Discovery, and they are all in a serious rerun season. Myhbusters is just not the same after the second time.

Even my kids now prefer computer games to Cartoon Network or KTV.

Kyknet used to be good but Coenie, Steve and Solly just doesn't do it for me any more. Rian has always been an idiot.

The movies are k@k. Period.

At least there is Top Gear on BBC. And live golf on weekends (lost a lot of sleep watching Tiger Woods lately). And Lat Wiel has its moments. But that's not enough for the money they are charging.

One of these days I am going to cancel. Just as soon as the golf season is over.
