Dstv my feelings

DSTV is an old fart much like cable in the US. Both are dying. In Europe FTA satellite services seems popular though...

Biggest plus is without MC, my son gets Nicolodean (spell) in HD, and Wifey and myself get History in HD.

Tried Netflix but ended up sticking with Hulu. We are more TV Show oriented than movie so Hulu suits us better. LOTS of kids stuff on Hulu.
Where do u get the nikolodean stuff?

Cable television is still big in the US, as is satellite TV. They might die in the future, but still going strong. FTA services in Europe? Show us some examples of the popular ones. The have pay TV over satellite, as well as IPTV (both with repeats). Obviously there are some FTA channels available, but I would call it niche...

Yes i must admit....DSTV does suck but some aspects of it don't.

Although I download all my series/movies via torrents you cant get local stuff on torrent sites.

A serious question though...how do you guys watch the local news and local series without DSTV or SABC (etv)?

DSTV is still big in SA, monopolies in the US are also ripping off customers with their internet bundles, but Google has stirred things up and prices are starting drop. The FTA stuff is popular enough I think among the frugal(like those complaining in this thread). The folks who can afford those premium rated services are not the ones complaining.

I too have a decoder in storage. Not worth selling and I doubt anybody wants it for free except maybe the guys that scratch through bins for scrap.

There is one thing that irritates me to no end on DStv and it is this:

1) repeated DStv adverts for the channel you are WATCHING and even worse the PROGRAM you are watching...this makes no sense
2) incorrect DStv adverts for programs
3) DStv advert for a program I want to see, miss part of the information, wait the rest of the day never to see that ad again...search their program guide and cannot find such a program

Solutions:
1) Get a PVR
2) Get a PVR
3) Get a PVR

The only time I ever see adverts is during live sport

After doing the install, for my father, HD, I have to say the following

Dstv is the biggest rip off I have ever seen.
The repeats are outrageous
The HD signal is only hd on sport channels the rest is not hd so don't believe the crap they say
There seems to be a problem with some channels not fitting the screen so you have to stretch the picture or make it smaller most time you cut off the edges
I am really not impressed and imo multi choice are ripping customers off blindly.

Unfortunately the average Joe Saffer doesnt know any better, has no access to any alternative, often equates the availibility of a service with "service" and sees quantity as quality.
Therefore multichoice and others continue to get away with ripping people off.

Crap, maybe you should let MC know then because according to them and their website, not everything is 1080 and any person with the gift of vision can see the difference.

Question - can you actualy see a difference betwen 720p and 1080p ?

I have a plasma 720p and watching for example, David Attenboroughs Africa, I can count the ball hairs on a dung-beetle.

Why would I need 1080p ?

Hi any guidelines on here to set up and test Hulu in Sa?

You cannot believe the quality of sport on DSTV, 1080i, its beyond brilliant. Very different IMO to their normal HD 720p
