Networks get paid what they are charging. If ABC wants 2 million per month for broadcasting rights, they get 2 mil.
Mnet's own Channels pay for content. eg: they pay per movie, and get discount if they show it more than once. the newer the movie, the more money it costs. that's why Prison break is so behind, because MC pay less because it is old shows.
Irrespective of the actual deal, the 2 million has come from somewhere.
It comes from ads and from subscribers. If you're downloading shows on
torrents, you probably don't own DSTV, hence you're one less person who
watches the ads on DSTV and one less subscriber - hence DSTV has less money to buy shows with. Extrapolate this around the world to the other networks and you'll see that as viewer numbers drop and subscriptions for PayTV channels decrease, there are less funds available to pay for shows - so DEMAND for shows decreases and studios have to sell them for less or stop making others - this means a reduction in both quality and quantity of TV shows and movies.
Which comes from the subscribers and the viewers?
Do you think Coca-Cola will pay 10 Million bucks for an ad slot on Fashion TV?
You that is viewing the show, is paying for the show - because ad campaigns cost a lot of money.
You who is paying a subscription OR viewing the show on TV to see the ADVERTS. You watching the ADS pays for the show. Now on torrented shows, there are no ads or even if there are ads they are from one particular network - whoever ripped the series first and seeded it first.
No subs - no money towards shows.
No watching of TV (DSTV, NBC, ShowTime etc) - no money from advertising.
Hence people who download shows INSTEAD of having DSTV or watching the show on TV are contributing to worse quality shows. People who would never get DSTV anyway - well those don't count.
So forgive me when I point this out to someone who says "Who needs DSTV?"
