DSTV not cancelling top shows

Peter -- the whole conversation is up and down = hot air :(

PLEASE show us the figures -- genuine ones

Lets see a proper balance sheet.

How much does it cost to produce a show -- How much do ads cost -- What is MultiChoices bottom line profit

Unless and until you can come up with the sort of figures and analysis that an Accountant would be happy with it is just all -- speculation -- and worth nothing

You must be new to the internet because 99% of the stuff on the web is speculation and even when you see figures these are estimates and even if not estimates they come from sources which have a vested interest in not showing truthful figures.

My point is that - no matter how pathetic DSTV is, people who pay for it contribute more towards these shows than people who leech them from the torrents and refuse to pay for DSTV subs because DSTV is late in showing its shows, it's expensive OR the downloaders think of themselves as being so darn smart.

Like it or not but DSTV is the genuine licensor for these shows, as may be ETV or SABC or DVD publishers. If you watch content without paying for it you are not helping with improvement of those shows. I don't mind if you do that but you have no moral right to brag about how cool you are for not paying for DSTV and your justifications have no merit. You're just being cheap.

No Honey No Money No DSTV

and you are just being obtuse

HOW did MultiChoice "acquire" their Pay-for-TV licence and how did they arrive at this industry dominating position

[ Leaves space here for Captain WiFi to chip in with NASPERS conspiracies ]

I do NOT download movies and I do NOT subscribe to DsTV

IF I was really cool I would find a way to de-crypt the stream and give it away for free.

There IS a difference between "fairvalue" -- and getting SCREWED :(

You're confusing ICASA granting NoChoice a Broadcaster's License and individual broadcasting rights for TV shows NoChoice buys from Copyright holders or their agents (distributors). You too, could buy the rights to
a TV show - say some South American soap opera or Asian dorama and
retail it in SA, or sublicence it to DSTV.

I know NoChoice is expensive and the shows are late. I have seen the latest Smallville, Heroes and Battlestar Galactica already. But I have a select few shows that I do watch like this.

Shows like 30Rock, Ugly Betty, Mentalist, Fringe, House etc. I watch on NoChoice. Then you have things like Discovery and NatGeo and History that I like watching but won't donwload the shows.

So all in all NoChoice is expensive but with limited bandwidth and a horrible national broadcaster I happily pay NoChoice.

I wonder what the Recession has done to Multichoice's support base, as R500 a month is a load of cash for people who are in a tight squeeze.

I doubt anyone will be able to wrest Multichoice's monopolistic grip on this sector of the market any time soon, so we had better just live with it.
Our market is probably too small for a lot of competitors to all make a profit hence M's unopposed status thus far.

My gripes:
1. I get a bit tired of the endless repeats on the Movie Channels.
2. On weekends Summit TV on Channel 412 screen an endless loop of a program called Ignition. While the program is entertaining for some I would prefer if we could see a summary of the weeks Business News within a certain time slot and some commentary of such with some guest speaker/s talking about the week ahead on the markets.
3. Erm .. Still miffed about the Sci Fi Channel. Since then I notice we have several new Sports Channels, hip hip hooray (sarcasm).
4. The automatic updater on the Decoder always resets the Language option to Family instead of the Original which is my preference.
5. The looooonnnng draaaawwnnn out Idols program. Not that I really watch it, but when the kids put the decoder on this channel I don't have much choice.

Ok, not wanting to make this an Anti Mutichoice post.
What can you get with R500 anymore these days. Go out for a meal with 3 or 4 people and R500 may not be enough. If you use M for your entertainment then it is cheap in my opinion.

One of my major gripes with [Mo]noChoice, is the sickening adverts to advertise how great [Mo]noChoice believes itself to be - advertised repeatedly across all channels to existing subscribers - enough to make projectile vomiting a way of life, and to make it worse, the clips used in these adverts are of shows & movies that have been off the air for a long time already - that is what I call false advertising.

I heard Reaper was possibly going to be cancelled (tv.com I think).
So, rumours are "correct", assigning those rumours to DSTV, not so much.
Reaper *is* in serious danger of being canceled, long before it ever airs here. The latest the CW will announce will be May upfronts, but the show's on enough thin ice right now that word could come at any day. You can help if you would like.
