DSTV Now App

Appears to be working fine on both my new Samsung Tab S 8.4 and Samsung Tab S 10.5

Only problem, I have 45 Gb of data per month, and only use this app towards the end of the month if i see I will be left with excess data

Hi icbxx,

Are you the same person chatting to me on the DStv Forum?
I'll need to check if our DRM provider supports the Minix Neo - I know there's a handful of Android devices that currently don't work. What version of Android is it running?
Hi MC_Nick,

Nope, it is not me. Can you point me to the said thread? Perhaps me and the poster you are referring to have similar issues.
The Neo X8-H is running Minix's official Version 2 firmware, based on Android 4.4.2. I am not sure this is a DRM issue - I suspect the Device ID of my device might be the same as another persons X8, hence why it says it is already registered. Shall I post the device ID for you in a PM?

A bit off topic but good to see a DSTV rep on board...sure he's going to be busy:whistle:

Minix

Hi
Did you ever come right with your Minix X8 running the DStv now app?

Hi there
Anyone find that Catch up on the DSTV now app is slow (buffers and bad quality) but on live TV part it runs really well?
On Android, M-NET movie last night streamed perfectly but trying catch up movie before and after and it was terrible.

I am having the exact issue with my Minix Neo X8. ..please assist!

@ MC_Nic are you still here? I have two questions please:

1. So for DSTV Now you need a Premium subscription R699 + R80 Access fee thats R779. Look thats bloody expensive but this is not about that so lets move swiftly along(because multichoice believes thats a great price). So if you only have Premium and pay R699 you get nothing from this app? Zero, nada not even R699's worth just plain nothing you can't even access the live stuff? If that is the case... ... ... actually i'm just lost for words then.

2. Chromecast! Is it supported if not why not? Actually no one cares it should be supported the end.

I have not installed the app, depending on your answers I might look into it.

What DStv app?

Searched the whole Windows Phone marketplace and there's nothing. :(

Hey there,

We don't have a Windows version of the app yet. I've seen it on the roadmap for this year though. Think it'll come out around the same time (or a little after) Windows 10.

Our DRM supplier doesn't currently support Minix devices, but we're working with them to try and get them supported. It's a bit of a lengthy process though. Sorry :(

Hey,

Yup, still here.

As a non-PVR customer (i.e. you're paying the R699 Premium subscription), you get access to the linear pay-TV channels on the bouquet you subscribe to. If you pay the additional PVR access fee, you get access to additional viewing environments like Catch Up and Catch Up Plus on your PVR, online and in the apps, Live TV streaming online and in the apps, XtraView, PVR functionality (Pause, rewind etc.) and the ability to record.

To answer your question about what you get out of the app if you're not a PVR subscriber, you can still access the TV Guide and the ability to set remote recordings if you have a connected Explora. But if you want to be able to access any of the video on demand services, you'll need to enable the additional PVR subscription.

2. Chromecast! Is it supported if not why not?

We did investigate an app for Chromecast but content rights were a stumbling block at the time. It's not off the table but it is something that requires lengthy negotiations with the content suppliers.

Cheers

MC_Nic.

You should really change the name of that pvr access fee to 'a digital content fee' since it's not specifically for pvr anymore.

I hear you. But I'm not in a position to make those decisions or even have any influence over them.

To be honest I believe the "Premium" package should include everything there shouldnt be more to add onto it. This bolt on nonsense just confuses customers who believe that they are paying "Full".... You always hear people say that when you ask them: "Do you have DSTV?" "Yes, the FULL package"

Clearly most people don't understand when you tell them, no look you need to pay an extra R80... "But why I have the 'full package'?" "Is dstv just trying to get more money from me now"

This is how a real conversation went the other day. You can't tell customers that they are Premium customers but deny them "premium" features or want a premium on top of the premium for it... if you follow what i'm trying to say

I totally agree. I guess Premium means we get access to the sport channels.

MC_Nic, do we have any update regarding the DRM for Minix as yet?

Not...sorry. I was in a meeting not too long ago where the issue of "expanding DStv Now to more devices" was brought up and there does seem to be some action on that front but it's sitting firmly with our 3rd party provider, along with support for Lollypop 5.1.1.

Hi, this is a bit off topic, but just wanted to ask if the streaming quality is going to be increased for SS5-SS7.

I get "HD" streams of SS1-SS4 on the SS/Now app for Android (Galaxy S4) but "non HD" streams of SS5-SS7.

For eg, it says SS3 HD but SS5 (ie. not the HD version).

I mostly watch SS5 for European football when I'm at work on the weekends and the quality is very bad on my phone, even with a solid HSPA+ connection.

Thanks in advance and please bring support for Lollipop as soon as possible.

Hi Shalin_ZN,

DStv Now only carries SS1,2,3,4 & 6. I think you're probably referring to the SuperSport app, which is not really my department, but I'll see if I can get someone on this side to answer that question for you. Hang tight.

Yea I know, that's why I said "SS/Now app for Android"

I mostly use the SS app to stream SS5 because it's not on Now. Also, why is SS5 not on Now? It makes no sense.

I have to say the TV Guide feature on Now has made my life a lot easier, big ups for that.

Well, thanks :)

There are more channels planned for DStv Now. This is a launch catalogue and it'll be expanded in the coming months.
