Watch out for R7 weekend

You know, if they want linear, instead of endless repeats and the same adverts for themselves, they could offer a premium service at a reduced price that would have half the country subscribing. Why not bring back a stand alone M-Net variety style channel showing the Bok games, the weekends big EPL match, Carte Blanche, the latest HBO series once a week, a Saturday night Hollywood blockbuster. I dunno, charge R300 a month. I’d sign up.

But nope, nearly R1000 a month for endless piles of trash spread over 90% of channels you won’t watch.

They actually deserve to go out of business.

Sure their "reason" would be "you can't have your cake and eat it" or "you can have one stream at 720p, or two at 360p. Our servers can't handle anything more"

They already do that. Their version of R7 weekend is when they open some Premium channels for lower level subs for a weekend/week/until the end of the month.

Clearly myself and many others, are not earning as much as DSTV assumes we earn, or they might consider a more suitable bundle selection than they currently do.

By now most of us have either found alternative sources, for our entertainment needs, or taken up other time filling activities, playing, chess, cycling, walking or some other activity that does not require the use of a TV.

DStv Premium offers incredible value for money when considering the number of streams or broadcasts it allows per subscription after its recent changes.

In April 2025, DStv increased its concurrent streaming device limit to two devices on its Premium, Compact Plus, and Compact plans.

This is laughable. Not long ago, MBB ran a far more intelligent article which explained that Netflix, Prime Video, Disney Plus, Showmax, YouTube Premium and e-vod COMBINED were cheaper than DSTV Premium monthly. You just couldn't have muh sport.

You can have muh sport (but not rugby or cricket) if you throw in StarTimes for R89 per month and it would still be cheaper than DSTV Premium. I would rather throw in Game Pass or PS Plus. I only watch YouTube highlights of muh sport. So how is DSTV value for money?

I wonder who the next entity will be who have successfully captured mybroadband. Back in the day we had RPM with OpenWeb and Vodacom. Now we have Jan and Multichoice...

It's kind easy to spot partner content. They always never have a link in the article to the actual forum thread - you know the shadow dropped partner without the said tag... but ja.

And 90% of the sponsored articles don't have the name of the company in it. When it gets to cities I don't get it though - but at least there will be a photo of Table Mountain, the Union Buildings, etc.

My point exactly. They could easily trim half the rubbish they have and offer more condensed packages at reduced prices. Have an M-Net type channel as your base, then pair with decicated packages of add ons. Movies, Sport, Entertainment, Indian, Africa Magic etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc.

They are dying on their feet and all they have managed to do is make people like me realise that living without live rugby or cricket or whatever sport they monopolise, does not mean the end of the world. I'm used to it now.

Makes sense. The person who came up with the idea to combat password sharing needs to be fired, that hurt Multichoice! The system already restricts number of devices which is an overkill in itself. It should just restrict viewing per the number of devices trying to stream at the same time, which is also already built in.

I get that. But if they want to get subscribers back they need to change the offerings and give people what they want by cutting the trash and focusing on true content.

For example I'd want a sports package, my mother in law is not interested in sport and wants movies. At the moment neither of us have DStv because we're not paying R1000 a month because we either can't afford it or there is no value in it. Give us a full package of each variety instead of watered down cheaper packages offering Blitz channel and Supersport Maximo or whatever schite that is.

People that don't want Sport can get Netflix Disney etc. No need for DSTV, and DSTV have cheap packages for non sport lovers.

Sure, and I agree with you. What I am commenting on though is DStv being overall bad value for money and failing to adjust to a streaming market filled with variety and choice. Sport is one thing and we all know the issue there, it's expensive and many of us have learned to live without it. But at the same time they have, or perhaps had, the chance to offer packages which would combat Netflix and Disney+ to those epeople who are not tech savvy and/or do not have decent internet. They've been far too slow and are now dying because of it, and yet, instead of doing something even now, they pay MyBB to print ridiculous articles.

A friend's mom worked in (I think) India for some time. He told me she subscribed to a basic TV package and then she added on singe channels that she like. Sounds like a great idea. Until then, hoist the sails!

I recall a colleague telling me about a very public argument between RPM and an IT manager of a big company. RPM denied that money played a role in editorial policy, article promotion, etc.
What is RPM up to these days?
