DStv premium pricing comparison: your help needed

Hi there

We are doing a pricing comparison between DStv’s premium service (R665 per month) and comparable international services.

It will be great if you can post links to international pay-TV services which are more or less the same as DStv’s offering.

Thanks!

Netflix is international... Just saying. :)

Uncapped 5Mbps = R 899* Correction
Netflix = +- R 90.00
Unotelly = +- R 12.00

So for let's say R 1000.00 *Correction* you can get international Series, TV channels and even Sport. The bonus? You have uncapped internet for all your devices in your house. R 300 more for about 100x more the reward.

Sky Sports Original bundle, with sports works out about R788 then their sports doesn't really have the SA content.

DSTV on the other hand gives you almost all of the sports that they offer.

How do you watch say F1 live?

You stream it from 1 or millions of sources via your uncapped internet. Doesn't have to go through Netflix. Examples here:

Saw this and kept it for a rainy day:

1) Most importantly: you can choose your own channels.
2) Since they are offering to an Indian market, most of the channels are Indian. Since we are comparing apples with apples. I will only choose English channels:
(Prices are in Rupees and are monthly)
HD:
Discovery HD - 22
National Geographic HD - 8
Star Movies HD - 30
Star Sports HD 1 - 40
Star Sports HD 2 - 29
HBO Defined HD - 90
HBO Hits HD -90

English Movies
Warner Bros -15
MGM - 9

English news:
Al Jazeera -5
BBC world - 10
CNN - 5

English Entertainment:
Comedy Central - 20
Discovery turbo -20
Fox Crime - 20

Documentry:
Animal planet -7
Discovery science - 17
History TV -17

HD acess fee - 125

Total = 579 Rupees, which is R 101 p/m at current exchange rates

3) If you are lazy, you could get absolutely everything they offer for 7000 Rupees a year which equates to R 1228 p/y

4) Now you need an HD PVR to view this:
500 GB HDD with 1080i resolution for 7000 Rupees which is R 1228

5) To get this package for another decoder costs 200 Rupees which is R35 extra per decoder

Personally: DSTV isn't even on the same page in terms of value when compared to this:

Hope this helps

Unotelly is $4.95 a month. Your R12 +- is slightly off.

SaskTel is my brother's provider in Canada, here are their packages (incl. internet) http://www.sasktel.com/wps/wcm/connect/content/home/maxtv/Packages/, they utilise 10Mbps satellite internet due to their location as the fibre ring misses them shortly.

I am posting this due to package setup as it can be broken down to their sport only. I mean at C$123.80/pm (expensive in our concern, but very good price point over there as the minimum wage is C$10/ph) it is nothing, yet it also includes all their basic channels/themes, apps, on-demand, unlimited internet (AUP/FUP applies) and other extras.

I'll be watching the British Grand Prix live on BBC. Perhaps you should sign up for a free Unotelly trial and see what's what. :)

Please also post information regarding splitting up of sport only options and where you can choose your own channels. MC has always maintained they dont offer it because its international practice which is a lie. You can get SKY sports bouquets on their own for example via streaming services.

BBC have a sports only app.

So if MC learn from myBB where the whales are, will they send in the harpoons?

Or is there nothing they can do?

What can they do?

They are already the reason so many things like Netflix doesn't launch in SA. There is nothing they can do about people streaming content. It has now evolved from watching M-net to DSTV to downloading series to streaming. They are dying as SA gets more and more internet connectivity.
