*Dripping sarcasm* ... see guys, Multichoice do care about giving us so much more for our money ... we are now blessed with a channel dedicated to Idols East Africa. I'm sooo glad to see the price hike has been put to such good use.:mad::mad:

They use the currency that depreciated as an excuse (as always)...

Happened 2 years ago when the Rand actually strengthened against all other major currencies... But they still used the excuse of a "weaker Rand"

Yup - like the new Sony channel - running that NEWSRADIO sitcom now for the 3rd time from the beginning (I actually quite liked it first time round)

DSTV can die. Canceled a year ago.

I *did* try to subscribe to that R139 Vodacom deal - but the paperwork requirements made me feel ill. Why I need credit checks and sperm samples for a "monthly in advance" service is beyond me.

Will stick to my library card.

Time to send them a strongly worded letter again, they can justify the price increase in my eye, if they added mtv2. We already have a ton of mtv base, o2, hip hop. How about catering for the dark underbelly of society (us metalheads), ya damn broadcasting nazis!!

dstv FTW

i love, i dont mind paying 500 bucks a month

you mention 1 or 2 crappy channels

you forget to mention 7-10 channels of sport, just about any sport they have it covered

then you have series channel, actionx, 110, sony which i enjoy then we have bbc prime which is also decent
movie channels
dicovery and all those channels
cnn bbc and sky for news
cooking channels which i dont watch but lots of ppl do

all the music channels

these are only the ones i watch but there is so much more than i have mentioned

plz man where can u find all the entertainment dstv offers for 500 bucks a month

i spend more than that when i go drinking in one night, now i must bitch and moan about paying the same for an entire month

now i know we get ripped off in this country but i dont think dstv is a rip off at all

flame on

Well you would if you knew what the rest of the world gets for a fraction of the price.

And you call those channels you mentioned "Decent"! (appart from the sport).
Whahah. Most are free anyway! - except here of course.

No Sci-Fi = not a cent from me.

dude the rest of the world has millions of subscribers we have something like 1.2million in terms of population vs dstv subscribers the ratio is much lower than a first world country where dstv(or whateva its called in that country) is something most ppl have

competition is another factor without comp there will be high pricing

dstv could make it 900 bucks and ppl would pay

telkom has a monopoly and they rip us to the bone

dstv is maybe 100-150 bucks more than most first world countries

The same as ADSL, cellphone costs, cars etc.

We pay more in south africa, for all of the above then many other places in the world.

But if you need ADSL, you gotta pay for it, if you need to use a cellphone, your gotta pay for it.

Cant pay for DSTV, well you got SABC and ETV for free! DSTV is worth it in my opinion, compared to the alternatives.

yeh yeh, millions of subscribers, don't compare SA with the rest of the world bla bla etc etc which means we should just sit back and enjoy 2nd rate stuff, poor service etc.

I'm sick of that cr@p!

Why the hell shouldn't we expect decent products and services? Africa or Not!

because our population is small

meaning turn over is small meaning companies need to maximize profits

i can assure you if we have 40% of the population subscribed to dstv we would not be paying these rates

our population is around 45 million not sure the exact figure

now if you think about 1.2 million dstv subscribers thats a small % of our population

now take just the sport dstv have

do you have an idea how much dstv pays for the english premier league alone

i would love to know what the champs league english prem league la liga serie a french league chARGE dstv but i assure you it aint cheap

i think you can blame sport for the cost of dstv

i dunno man, cancel your service and go watch sabc and etv, you'll beg dstv for a reconnection

If the price was less, more people would be able to afford it. But instead, they charge the max they can get away with. If you look at the profit they are making, you can't convince me that they are hurting financially.

1.2 million describers times...say an average of R300 for interest sake? f%ck me thats alot of money monthly. R360 Mil. and that Excl. advertising which I can assume is also in the high millions.

surely, as the subscriber base increases, turnover increases and therefore either increase channels or lower prices to attract more subscribers. more subscribers means more viewership for advertising clients.

Well in all fairness to dstv, that channel has been always there,it's an event channel, shows you idols "everywhere" and bigbrother "everywhere" for a loooong time now.

Wanna bet? You already lost. Canceled mine last April - have not missed it at all.
qft

I have lived without dstv for 10 years now. Don't miss it.

Edit: I can afford it.. no problem. But no way in hell I Pay that much for repeats. Thanks but no thanks!

After flicking it on one day and seeing the same episode of Mythbusters in the same time slot, that has been in that time slot so many times, I lost it.
Add to that the old excuse of "it affords the majority of our subscribers the best opportunity to not miss an episode" and you have the makings of "tv-rage" right there.

Didn't they just 'celebrate' reaching the 2million subscriber base? That's about R940 million a month before you add in all the "this programme is brought to you by" fees. So most of the first rate programmes (few and far between as they are) are paid for by mostly car companies! I reckon just their advertising revenue probably pays for at least all the sports. So .... justify their prices for subscribers how exactly? Greedy f***ers is all they are.
