Look i'm just floating ideas here ;) i don't have any technical knowledge in this area. But from a business perspective i'd do it as it will limit the options of my captive market. What everyone should realise is that we ARE a captive market. Without a viable alternative we're stuck with MC. Pity odm and other licensee's haven't launched yet but don't expect much improvement- mc probably has all the content from providers tied up for atleast another 2/3 years. Would love get sky tho- HD content and current series.

ICASA will only be able to try and stop people from buying the equipment to receive the signal. I don't think they can actually order Sky to not broadcast, especially from outside the countries borders.

Exactly.

I'm moving out soon and I will not be getting DSTV.

Waste of money!

There are tons of stuff we don't see here. That would be a poor excuse for new entrants... :)

The time is ripe for competition in this market. It doesn't make sense for these entrants not to start up... Something odd is afoot. Could it be the credit crunch? If Multichoice can up prices in this market then clearly not!

DSTV price increases

Lets hope they channel the money they will be making into researching and updating their HD-PVR.

Alas, I was one of the poor suckers to rush out and get one when it first came out: to this day, I still have problems. R500 a shot each time a technician comes out to sort it out.

I miss my old SD (now thankts to the HD, is non-functioning!). It was fast, responsive, didn't have to be reset and 'woken-up' in the mornings. Sounds like I am dealing with a 132 yo grandmother, the way this HD works, lol.

As for price increases, in this time of financial insecurity, that is nice slap in the face of the consumer. I wouldn;t say I am too cosey to cancel my subscription: really dont have too many other options. Go back to watching SABC??? No thanks, I'd rather shoot cocaine in my eyeballs :)

South Africa, the Viagra country: giving rise to prices and scr&^^%ng the customer ;-)

Wow - now I'm glad I canceled my subscription last month. I couldn't justify paying almost R470 a month to watch about 4 hours of TV a month - I now rather take the money and buy a season of a series I enjoy watching.

As for the rugby, I NEVER sit at home watching it alone. I always go over to friends or family and enjoy it with them. Its just more fun enjoying it on someone else's budget... ;)

So long DSTV - you will not be missed.

Just give me a sports bouquet (SS1, SS2, ESPN (Golf) and special sports events channels) in HD for R200 or even R250. Shove the rest.

Yip, thats what i also need, not going to pay R500 odd a month for the full premium package while the compact packages hardly have any sport channels. So until i can get a sports package for a reasonable price no DSTV for me....

If we could all come together. And stick it out....

If you and everyone you konw just cancel DSTV for ONE MONTH just one!

That would wake them up on the other end.

Just imagine +- 500 people canceling there service all one the Premium bouquet that is R234495 they will loose.

But this is africa and we never seem to stick together and go through with something.

Remember when the UK Boycotted bread because it went up a few p.... now that team work

What is technically stopping them from offering me the option to choose, say 16 channels, that I actually do use? Then I pay for getting those channels only...

Well 4 things I can muster :

1) Greed
2) Disaffection for customers
3) Lack of any moral sense
4) Lack of any common sense

This is more evidence of what I'd like to call the "Pick 'n Pay effect".
[Scene : Boardroom; Night; Directors sitting around the table.]
Director 1 : "Forget about recession, forget about dropping fuel prices, forget about economic turmoil : Everybody is already paying Rx for an item, what is to stop us from asking Rx+Ry?"
Director 2 : Nothing...
Director 1 : Exactly.
(Hearty chuckles all round, followed by some single malts and champange chasers)

I'll be cancelling my DSTV shortly then, if the increase rumors hold true.

They offer no value...maybe only the sport channels. Why they don't have a supersport only package blows my mind...anyways I cancelled last year - not worth the money.

Well stoke of course they have ads or they would need find another 20 minutes of content an hour.

They are a business and they need to make money and i think 500 rand for the service they offer is pretty decent and comparing our 3rd country to a 1st country is pointless, why not look at the rest of africa and ask yourself how is their tv?

Exactly, show content from free-to-air US channels is mostly only 39-42 mins, while "pay for" US channels normally do 50 mins.

So MC have a choice, fill the other 20 odd mintes per hour with more content which costs $$$. Or sell ad time, which brings in $$$.

Hmmm... that's really a tough decision for anyone, eh?
So we can call them thieves, we can call them cheap, we can call them morally grey, but we can NOT call them stupid. :p

This is bad! I am most definately considering cancelling my subscribtion. I only re-activated in December but with this increases, I won't be able to afford it anymore.

DSTV should be refunding me a small amount on my bill every month, everytime they repeat a show or episode...

Nothing quite like watching the same episode of Mythbusters every night, to help justify the R500 a month :(

This is a joke, they keep putting up the prices for everything including HD. I was one of the earliest of adopters of this service and it's utter crap. We are so far behind other countries it's frightening.

I'm sick of watching, cricket, rugby etc and on the remote stations its 'Available in HD' and all we get is one lousy game a week.

I think I will be switching to DStv delect, I am not going to keep on paying for Premium. My questions now is, if I get Select from Vodacom and they give me a new smart card, how will this affect my DSD 1110 which allegedly cannot accept other smart cards.

Just a question to the techno advanced ppl here- how do u get free to air channels on ur dstv decoder? Is it possible at all to get ANY free to air channels from europe? And how do u go abt this? If anyone knows pls pm me...
