Dstv quality: dish vs streaming

Like all streaming you'll be limited to 720p.
Safari doesn't seem to have quality issues like other browsers do. Netflix, Amazon Prime etc. all pristine in Safari.

The quality is noticeably superior with DStv Stream when using Safari, but it's easily worse than satellite. Still noticeable artefacts around Supersport logos and most on-screen text overlays.

Why not just use the apps?

More convenient most of the time to use a browser. I like to keep an eye on the F1, golf or Olympics casually while I'm working. I guess I could switch the second display to Xbox or buy a streaming box for my desk, but what a schlep.

Just the Supersport ones, I haven’t really tried any others. My wife has the dish at her restaurant so I set up the app on my Apple TV for the olympics. The settings say highest quality up to 4k so I’m assuming that’s what I’m watching. The picture quality is excellent.

Tried most SS channels, I don't get 4K.

That’s on my tv using an 4k Apple TV box. I don’t know about the apps or browsers though.
I was testing on my MI tablet pad 5. Which is 2.5 k .. maybe the app detects the device's resolution ? Too lazy to install DStv on my TV now to test

The interface is pretty annoying, but the quality surely depends on your set up?

Of course the dish would offer consistent high quality, but I have zero issues and an amazing picture quality at 4k on my Apple TV and 500mbps Ethernet cable direct from my router.

I should add I only watch sport so not sure about the other channels.
I also use Apple TV and 300MB line.

One is on Ethernet one is on 802.11ac and I only watch Formula 1 and it is consistently garbage.

DSTV doesn’t do 4K so how do you get 4K out? Unless it’s on specific channels?

But yes the interface is also piss poor and slow as hell.

I honestly don’t know. The setting is there as I showed in that pic and it’s selected automatically. I’ve now been watching Dundee Utd v Dundee on ESPN 2 for the last hour and a half and it’s got the same settings and the picture is great. I’m not sure if it’s 4k but it’s certainly HD and there is no pixelation, buffering or stuttering.

I was having some issues with wifi and streaming so I swapped out all my kit a couple of weeks ago and bought a few Reeyee routers and got the professionals in to redo the cables to my tv and a couple of workstations. It’s been running beautifully ever since with the full 500mbps to the Apple TV. It is the 4k version so maybe the app is tailored for it?

The 4K option doesn’t work anymore , this option appeared when Dstv was doing 4K broadcasts for the World Cup in 2022

On my 4K tv I get the Option but selecting it looks like 720p or maybe 1080i on my 200mb fibre

So are you saying the option is there but it’s not implemented? I have to admit that the picture quality is really good but I guess if it’s 1080 then that’s fine as it’s working nicely for me.

I use the 4k option as a (hopefully) least compression / loss / pixelation. My AppleTV and screen can only do 1080

Most 4k sport is just 1080p upscaled 4k

I run an enterprise grade network at home…it’s definitely not on my side.

I do suspect the setting is just there to potentially upscale to that resolution internally yes, not actually receive broadcast at that quality.

Or maybe they just have it there for forward planning.

Yes maybe it is 1080i but definitely not 4K, i remember how the World Cup looked in 4K on the same tv

I can’t say the same of good picture quality mine looks like it’s barely 1080p

No streaming service uses interlaced anything. It’s a remnant of the CRT days.

The resolution is just one aspect of it.

The bitrate is what kills sports watching. Having a 4k stream but at 2.5mbps will still give you a poor viewing experience.
Having that same stream at 16mbps will change the entire viewing experience.
The problem? It costs a lot more to stream those high bitrates.

The app says up too 4K with no way, to confirm what he is actually getting.
