DSTV Rant Thread...

Come on man. That's just how the game works. If they didn't have protection the length of the average career in the nfl would probably be 2 games.

Ha - rugby players take bigger knocks than those American pansies and have long and illustrious careers...

You have clearly not watched nfl. How can rugby players possibly take harder hits than football players. Line backers in the nfl are in the region of 6 foot 5, and weigh about 110kg and all they've been doing for the past ten years of there life is learning to tackle as hard as they possibly can. Also there is very little rules about how the tackling is to take place, compared to rugby.

that's the size of our scrumhalves, lol :D

well, with 50kg's of padding, any tackling is gonna be basically null and void ......

Never heard of a prop? Or a flank? Or a lock? Or an 8th man? They're trained tougher, and without the pansie head gear, shoulder pads, goolies protectors, shin pads, chest guards etc. And they do it for 80 minutes flat out. Stick a line-backer in a scrum and he'd be screaming for mommy quicker than Linoman posting in Thread Killer.

Tackles mean jack when you're wearing a suit of armour...!!!

Yes i have. They are alot better at what they do. I agree, put a line backer in a rugby game and he'll be half dead from fatigue after 40 minutes. But put habana in at running back on an nfl team without padding and he won't walk of the field after a quarter of play.

I fixed that link. Watch it.
My point was that it's not a pansy sport, and that padding is absolutely necessary to keep the players safe.

The comparison you are making is like comparing a rifleman to a sniper. Sure if you put the sniper bang in the middle of the battle he's not gonna be worth much. That doesn't make the rifleman a better shot though.

I've seen one or two big hits in NFL (stayed in Dallas for a while) but far from what you see in rugby, but I get what you're saying. It's the stop-start nature of the game, the separate offence and defence teams and the boring nature of the sport in general that puts me off. It's never caught my interest in the least little bit. And I really do not believe that the suit of armour is necessary - the knocks they take are on a par with what rugby players take, without injury (most of the time)...

I am loyal Sharks supporter born and raised in Durban, but I love American Football ( favourate team is the Baltimore Ravens )because to me its the ultimate team sport , I cannot think of another sport where every player has a unique pupose or role in a game ( i.e The Quarterback controls the offense , the olinemen protect the quaterback from getting sacked, The wide recievers help the quaterback by catching the balls and moving the offense down field) In Rugby there isnt that , its basically ever man for himself. Honestly comparing it to rugby is ridiculous because you cant.

Also more and more professional rugby teams have been wearing more armor under there uniforms, so please dont make it sounds like Rugby players are tougher cause the dont wear padding. Simply put Football is a collision sport & rugby is a contact sport

Just so you know that Hit on Wide reciever Anquan Boldin required Anquan to have facial surgery, basically his helmet saved his life ,they wear protection for a reason. The Jets safety who laid the hit got fined a pay cheque and was suspended for one game.

Ravens FTW.
Seems to me that we'll be watching TEN v BAL on Saturday and PIT v SD on Sunday. Time slots on the DSTV guide is set out for games at 23:30 on both nights.

Don't be silly.

EDIT - I think you might be confusing flag football with football.

Football is a mistake. It combines two of the worst things about American life. It is violence punctuated by committee meetings. ~George Will

:D

NFL is far more addictive watching than rugby. It's a carefully orchestrated vicious ballet. Most of the NFL players make rugby players look like midgets and dwarves. Then there's the hitting power. It's awesome.
I once thought rugby was tougher, but my misconception was soon sorted out.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UKUG-dqO7aI&feature=related 1 minute in Polota-Nau on Collins. This angle isnt the best one, but couldnt find any other. Two players, both at full speed. A thing of beauty.

Same video. 2:33 secs in. Rococoko on polota-nau. Another beauty.

Too many to list here. In fact, do a search on rugby big hits on youtube and you'll be entertained for a while.

The NFL links someone posted in this thread pale in comparison

So I drive up north for the holidays..and boy are people snapping up DSTV like hot cakes! Seriously, it crazy back home (Louis Trichardt)..every third house now spots a dish.

Most of the people up there are deeply religious/spiritual and they are mostly in it for the Christian channels. My folks are also about to cop one, mostly for the cricket though ::)

As for me(apart from F1, Cricket and the Rugby), I d rather get me some more bandwidth

Seriously?
The guy gets up immediately.
Aquan Boldin was wearing full protection and a helmet in the link that i posted.
He suffered a concussion and had to have facial surgery. The doctor that examined him compared the injury to that obtained in car crashes. Was it not for the helmet he may very well have been dead. And somehow it pales in comparison.

I'm going out on a limb here, but i'm willing to guess that you haven't actually watched NFL.
Growing up in south africa i've been watching rugby most of my life. And it can't be compared to NFL on any level.
In rugby the objective is to tackle the guy, get up and secure the ball.
In football there are 11 guys on the field who are going to do their level best to kill the guy carrying the ball.

I seriously considered that. Add R530 to my present internet and you can get uncapped....add P2P and you can nearly watch what YOU want..the live sport stops me from dumping them...

We're talking about who takes the hardest hits. Did you watch the big hits on youtube? Same type of collisions to NFL, yet no real protection in rugby. The NFL guys are just playing bumpercars with all that padding.

WRT Boldin; are you seriously trying to use an example of an illegal tackle that got the tackler fined and banned for a period as an example of what goes on normally? Illegal rugby tackles can also result in serious injuries similar to those "obtained in car crashes".

Anyways, have watched NFL and wasnt impressed, but to each his own I guess.

Not just injury - quite a few rugby players have died due to their massive injuries sustained on the field. This is Africa - it aint for sissies. US on the other hand - well they like their suits of armour...:D

Illegal or not, it is what goes on normally. The legal hits aren't much softer.
Here's a final link to a highlight reel.

Once again i'll challenge you to find a similar highlight reel from rugby.
NB: IF the guy get's up afterward and tries to run further it doesn't count!
