DSTV Subscription Fees Protest?

Once MC strangles TopTV, there is not a single 24-hour english-language channel available in SA without going through Multichoice. Not exactly people trying to get Louis Vuitton for cheap! English is an official language and the primary language for communication. It is a pitiful failure yet again of .gov to firstly not provide such and secondly to facilitate a sector it regulates to successfully provide a choice of service providers!
 
I'm dropping to DSTV compact as it has all the channels my wife watches at a pretty decent price. Then subscribing to netflix and hulu for everything else.
 
I'm in the same boat. Everytime I try to pursuade my family that DSTV is not worth it, I get a bucket load of complaints. So now they watch the DStv compact and I have 2mb uncapped. Still works out to about the same pm as I would be spending on dstv premium. Ridiculous!

Correct. Prices I will complain about:
Petrol
Staple foods (including meat)
eToll
Baseline (meaning bottom of the range) broadband packages (I believe this is not a luxury but a necessity in 2013).
School uniforms

Prices I will not complain about:
Restaurants
DSTV
Nespresso pods
Concert tickets
Ster Kinekor popcorn & coke

The items in the first list are unavoidable.
The items in the second are very avoidable - can't afford = don't buy

Louis Vitton is an extreme luxury, but still in the same parameter of luxury goods
 
in the broader scheme of things DSTV is probably less than 2% of my monthly budget, I can afford it, it keeps many people in my household happy (I have between 5 and 7 people that watch simultaneously through dualview), it's used constantly (and I mean close on about 16hrs a day), and I can record what I want when I want

no inclination to protest at all

and I have uncapped 4MB ADSL
 
DSTV is a luxury. As a consumer you should be able to choose the channels you want to see. Example if you like sports then charge a subscription of R200 for all sports channels. If you into movies then have a package for that but highly doubt it will ever happen

I am in the same boat as you, but I am sorry to tell you that if we drop the other stuff and just have to pay for our sport we are going to pay more than the part that falls away. They are currently subsidizing us not the other way around, if I remember the article from mybb correctly. Local content (sport services) is very expensive to maintain.

They may have said that, but if it is true or not, is another question. I know many people, who would get DSTV if they could choose a more affordable package with only sport. Add those subscribers, and they will make back the cost they would have lost by having a cheaper package, if not make more. I also wouldn't be surprised if it is the viewers that have DSTV only for sport, that is subsidizing the rest of the users. Why you ask I think this? Well there are those people that just can't live without their sport, in fact when they visit me, and I have no DSTV, they can't understand how I can live without it.

The point of boycotting for me, was because there was a far better alternative.
(excluding sport of course - DSTV should be up before the Competition commission for the monopoly they have on Sport in SA!)

It's not just in SA. Sport is very expensive.
 
I have decided to cancel all my services, with the exception of the Walka 7.

I will use the Walka for sport, Skynews and CNN websites for news, and Netflix (or iTunes) for series and movies.

DSTV is just too badly structured, and consequently too expensive.

My preference would be to have about 7 channels of my choice, for about R300 per month.

If I cannot have that I will pass, there is better content elsewhere.

I think some of us are missing the point, its not just that its a luxury so if you dont like the price dont buy it. The point is the same as for other things we get ripped off for in SA. My family in europe pays less than the price we pay for dstv and they get:
cable tv (same as dstv but with more channels)
uncapped 10mb adsl
phone line rental (including one overseas number which they can dial and speak for as long as they like for free)

So the point we should make here is that we get ripped off for the same thing that others get in other countries.

I have just cancelled my dstv and have loaded netflix ..... great content and all in HD, now about to subscribe to hulu, there are alternatives and if we stop paying for silly tv prices and silly cell phone price etc. things will change.

What is the population density in Europe? What is the Average income? What do they pay for property? etcetc.

Don't get me wrong, I know we're being ripped off in some departments, but in other we have an absolutely great deal.

It is true, greater population density and all but never the less we still get ripped off.
