I only use DSTV when on holiday in SA, and recently (say last 18 months) they have started charging R50 each time I request re-connection.

Is there any work-around this recently introduced charge?

I doubt it. Monochoice seems to want to become like Telkom and steal all our money....

It used to be R50 reconnection with per day billing, that have changed since the new Terms and Conditions in June 2008.

Now it is R50 reconnection and a month-to-month contract! :(

The DSTV installation in my holiday home is the only installation I have - I always paid only for the number of days needed at the time I request reconnection and phoned to confirm the disconnect on the day it's no longer needed - I still do this, but it costs an extra R50 each time.

Does the connection fee apply when you upgrade from another bouquet? Then just down grade and upgrade to/from the R20 bouquet. At lease with the R20 bouquet you get some extra stuff over normal analog tv channels.

If you have DSTV in your main home, just take the card with you on holiday - surely!
I think he's only in SA when he is on holiday. IOW - the rest of the time he's abroad.

afaik the smart card gets linked to the decoder these days. So one would need to take the whole decoder along...

Only on the new cards, and only on (new) DSTV decoders. Alas, I see he's in the UK, so the only option is to buy a card and then take the minimum subscriber holiday they offer. Maybe borrow one from someone also on holiday (timeshare?)
