Could be easy decision but will wait - DStv Compact is on Top (excuse the pun)...
Well good for you but I cannot say I agree with you.
The reason I took Compact on DStv is so that my needs can be met.
When I say my needs I mean information (news, general knowldge etc), entertainment (music, series, movies and cartoons[for my son]), sport and at an affordable price (R232/mth).
Compact really has it all.
I guess the South African market is still very much divided into soccer vs rugby & cricket when it comes to sport - which is sad. So, as a Compact subscriber who is into soccer, my needs are absolutely met.
It is sad that this is the state of affairs really because I do not think that all rugby and cricket fans are happy to pay the R529 in order to watch their favorite sport/s. Also, the fact that these sports are made so expensive means that people like me cannot see the joys of cricket & rugby and develop a liking for them, meaning my son will not be influenced by them too. This means that the sporting industry's division will continuen to be prepetuated. I cannot even watch golf so I will not make it a part of my life.
Verdict. If you want a complete bouquet rather stick with DStv. Even if you want a semi-complete one. Maybe DStv should launch Compact 1 and 2 with Compact 2 having rugby and/or cricket as opposed to soccer or add a bit of both to their current Compact offering and make it R279/mth. I would pay.
Otherwise, what I have seen on TopTV is attractive if you are not into sport. There are also some small issues regards to freezing pictures and heavly granulated pixelation, which my wife has complained about especially when watching SABC 2. We are on the R99 bouquet. I think we will try TopTV's full bouquet in August (after the world cup and at the beginning of the football season) and see if they broadcast any live games. If they don't I will see if I can live with it. Frankly speaking, I don't see how I can coming from DStv compact where I could watch my team in action in the EPL, Champion's League and FA and Carling Cups.
The decision might be easy really. Stay with DStv Compact.
BALLS (balls on the line)
I can honestly say that moving from Dstv Compact to TTV was a good move and I am enjoying the content that TTV has to offer (got sick of all the Dstv repeats anyway).
So far the following has kept me and the wife entertained:
Discovery Science - Mythbusters & How Its Made, Science of the Movies etc.
CurrenTV - Huge variety of content created by viewers shown in short pods and often categorised in countdown/best of type shows - literally anything from South American gangsters, robots, technology (basically everything)
Kerrang - Best music channel I have seen
FOX Entertainment - X-Files & The Simpsons
Discovery Travel & Living - for the wife
Top Explore - Globetrekker
FOX FX - Las Vegas
TOP Crime - Relic Hunter
TOP History - some interesting WW2 doccies etc.
Investigation Discovery - much better than Zone Reality
Not watched the movies too much yet, but I am sure they will get newer titles soon.
The lack of sport is not missed as I only had soccer on Compact anyway.
At least TTV is trying to meet the demands of the pay tv market by offering some degree of choice and affordability, unlike DSTV who try to milk as much as possible out of their subscribers.
Rise up South Africa ....
