After sticking to my guns for years choosing not to have DSTV and not to support another monopolising company in SA, I've finally decided to take the plunge. I'm a big motorsport fan and it seems like the only option in SA to watch Formula 1 live is on Supersport 7 on DSTV - so Premium package, here I come baby!

So where do I start? Is there a DSTV for Dummies book perhaps? With typical levels of service I'm loathed to just pick up the Yellow Pages and dial the nearest installer. Almost did that but had the foresight to look for the company I chose on hellopeter.com and was very happy I did not call them.

I stay in Cape Town's Northern suburbs - can anyone here recommend a good, reliable installer in the area?

The new 2P HDTV decoder advertised on the DSTV website looks nice. Any opinions on it?

Cheers
Neville

I've been a subscriber for many years now, and if F1 is all you're interested in, then I'd suggest you rather stream it off the internet. The only reason I keep DSTV is for the sport, but if there was an alternative to the live rugby and cricket I'd gladly give it up...

get a DSTV Drifta - R49 per month, decoder = +/-R500, secondhand is cheaper.

There are plenty of threads to help you here on mbb to get it working full screen on your tv.

I have DSTV "Easyview" = R20 pm + 2 Driftas, one for my son who is at varsity.

Hey DJ, I definitely enjoy live rugby and hoping to watch some Olympics this year as well. Other stuff too like Nat. Geographic etc., movies, etc. So not just interested in F1 but that is a big drwaing card for me.

I moved from TopTV to DSTV in March.

Chalk and cheese!

I got the new HD PVR 2P with the free Drifta for R1500-ish from PnP Hyper.

I really was doing my Samsung 40D550 TV a disservice with TopTV. DSTV in HD is just awesome!!

Shows like American Idol and Got to Dance really come into their own with the HD picture and sound.

Im not fussed about sport at all, but it is just soo much better in HD.

My wife and I have all our favourite series on record. I don't even watch media downloaded from the internet anymore.

For now I'm happy to pay for what I'm getting.

Streaming f1 from where? All i have seen is crappy low quality shyte with ads. Besides there is more than f1 on SS. Streaming seems like the new buzz word in sa but nobody can provided links to decent quality sport streaming, all degraded low quality crap. You then also have to prey that your internet can stream without issues.

Check the supersport site or phone them they will recommend someone.

As much as dstv is a monopoly, nobody can argue that there sport content is lacking, considering they are monopoly they certainly know how to spend money on sport :D.

I can vouch for Quantum Theory being incredibly helpful with regards to anything DSTV related...

I can't vouch for quality from any of the sites but I have heard it is very possible. VipBox was recommended to me...

I watched the F1 yesterday on mypremium.tv.

No ads, BBC commentators and only a bit of buffering here and there.

Even better than watching it on Drifta ( which only showed a rerun at 8pm last night ).

How good would it look on my 46" led though? Badly degraded? I would get beyond angry with buffering.

Absolutely crap ;)

But I got to watch the entire race, free, and not one cent to DSTV.

Ahhhh but i got to sit back on my couch chilling with a two salads yum yum watching it in good quality on 46" monitor :D. I gotta to say that is so much better than watching a low quality feed, then after that i could flip through the soccer with ease and check the ipl while watching my fav singer on idols :D. All for 700 bucks a month. Heaven i tell you.

That was still a slow sport day mind you :D but your way sounds terrible. R700.00 bucks for SS is cheap and i love it so much.

Yip. This is also why I have DStv. It's just much simpler.

And here I've just taken the plunge and cut the cord - we are finally free of DSTV! A sub-R200 1mb uncapped adsl line is more than adequate in keeping my family entertained. :)

What are you subscribed to? Downloading i guess :D. Look if you don't watch sport dstv is worthless.

Thanks all for the various comments. I'm in IT myself and I hear what some say about streaming becoming more feasible... I don't think it's here yet though. I have a 4MB line and depending where you stream from and what time of day, especially HD, there is still lots of connectivity issues to be solved. As for scheduling downloads overnight and watching later, I simply don't have the time or inclination for that. That also takes the "live" part out of sport. I want to come home after long day at the office in front of computers, press a button and have TV without needing to face another computer :p As one poster said, "ease of use".
