DStv working on streaming-only package to take on Netflix

I currently pay R550 PM for my 100 GB capped internet
I pay R49 PM for Amazon Prime, or R99 for Showmax or R129 for Netflix. I shuffle between the 3 since not one of them have that much good content, so I have one for a month or 2 and then try the next again.
Then I also borrow my dad's smart card number for DSTV Now, which I only use for sport.
Let's call it R700 PM excluding the sport, but keep in mind that R700 PM gives me internet as well.
I don't see how they will be able to compete, even if sport gets excluded.

Paying R1000 per month for a streaming sub plus R2000 per month for 100 Mbps uncapped internet.
You don't need a 100Mbps for DSTV Now so I doubt you would for a standalone product.

If they charge me R300 to R350 for just supersport 1 and 2 FHD, I will jizz in my jean pant right there and then and take their price lock thing just because, you know, they're Multichoice.
They won't, because, you know, they're Multichoice. ;)

My point exactly and my question then, what will be the point?
Bying a decoder and installation for R2000 or whatever it costs these days then paying R1000 per month for a sub.
vs
Paying R1000 per month for a streaming sub plus R2000 per month for 100 Mbps uncapped internet.

If it's the same price and they allow 4 devices per subscription with 1080p, I'll jump on it.

Then I don't have to try and set up another DSTV decoder with a heartbeat cable and direct link to SLNB upstairs ( will be 3rd point ). It's just too much of a schlep.

On the other hand, I have cat6 connections in all rooms and WiFi if needed, so watching TV will be easy for everyone.

Prediction: It will not be in the same price range as netflix, and netflix has nothing to worry about.
Prediction2: It will take as long as they took to develop the console Showmax apps to roll this out.

I hope I am wrong :whistling:

Currently for DSTV Now you don't, but if they will allow 4 devices to stream at the same time in 1080p or 4k, then you suddenly need all the internet you can lay your hands on.

I've been at a house the other day where 3 HD Netflix streams was going at the same time, not sure what speed fibre they have, but to do anything else on the internet at the same time was quite a struggle.

Where MultiChoice lost over 100,000 DStv Premium subscribers during the last financial year

100,000 is awesome. Hope the current financial year is equally horrific for them.

Supersport streaming. The only thing missing from our household since cancelling DSTV is being able to watch MotoGP/WSBK really.

Mawela said it is clear the future is in online streaming and on-demand video.

It's actually, the present (maybe even the past and present), not the future. They should get with the times or get left behind with the likes of Blockbuster. Greed is what makes these companies go down. They want to line the pockets, instead of pushing money in R&D, innovation and their customers. Till it's too late to catch up. Well, that's probably what this article is about, playing catch-up.

EDIT: They probably don't realize, that no one will be crying at the wake.

Speaking as one of the 100000 I can also say that we have long memories of being screwed over by MC. So even at a competitive price point I won't be going back to them. Far happier with what I have now on fibre, even if the sports are a bit iffy (but not that bad, really).

R600 p/m for 10/10 fibre.
Under 2 grand setup of the dedicated pvr and wireless hdd.
Get to watch *.*
When will these dinosaurs get it?

How do you get Amazon Prime for R49 per month?

How do you get Amazon Prime for R49 per month?

If you have Amazon prime, you qualify to get Amazon prime at a discounted discount, delivered free, at your door step. :crylaugh:
The rest of us pays like $12.
Prime Video, on the other hand is now $2.99 for the first 6 months and then $5.99. Don't know what he was referring to.

DStv is developing a streaming-only version of the service, MultiChoice South Africa CEO Calvo Mawela told MyBroadband.

This comes after MultiChoice CEO Mark Rayner said at the start of 2017 that DStv will definitely have a streaming service in the future – the only question was when.

Strange that Naspers owns MonoChoice, Naspers owns Showmax, and yet it sounds like MonoChoice has never heard of Showmax, and instead wants to develop something that streams content like Showmax already does.

I agree with bwana, the price of MonoChoice's newly reinvented papwiel will be very close to the premium price of DSTV since MonoChoice will want to recover the R&D costs in the first month of rolling it out and all the months thereafter will be pure profit (if anyone with FTTH/LTE actually falls for MonoChoice's marketing propaganda).

Although I'd prefer lower prices, my most optimistic realistic hope for a DSTV streaming service is this:

DSTV Now Basic: R399pm (incl. football)
DSTV Now Premium: R599pm

I'm not optimistic that Multichoice will be willing to deviate from their satellite pricing more than that, but I am optimistic enough to believe that they're not stupid enough to price the service out of the market.

The equivalent of around £35 or $47 for a mega comprehensive streaming service with all sport at 1080p is competitive internationally. I feel this is the best we can hope for.

Don't they technically have those rights already? Are they going to compete with the other Naspers streaming service Showmax?

They are ready to flip the switch and drop the price to less than half. Just waiting for the time when they are forced to do so, until then they will screw the customer

And if your dad cancels his DSTV there goes that option. All well and good a lot of you cut the cord from DSTV but then you use someone else's account. Isn't that a bit hypocritical? I'm DSTV free, but I use someone else's account????
