DSTV

get a cheap dvd player with a usb most of them play divx files

I agree - the HD PVR's software is still very buggy and a nightmare to use (until you eventually get used to it with time). There is one, maybe 2 software updates per year if you are lucky and so far most problems resume unresolved since it's launch 3 years ago.

The SD PVR is better ito software (more stable), but still nowhere near worth the money - buy a DVR. I have had my SD PVR for 5 years and it has only one worthwhile SW update the past 2 years (@ almost R700 per month).

The only reason the DSTV PVR's have a reason to exists is because MC keeps the Electronic Program Guide to themselves (making recording easier) and do not make it available like other content suppliers. They know if the do, people will abandon their crappy bug riddden PVRs and buy something worth the money.

P.S. When buying any DSTV PVR, you are forced to pay te R65/75 extraview fee whether you use it or not. Take that into account before deciding.

Cons? Yes, premium is overpriced, poor customer care skills, poor call centre staff, poor hardware/software, poor accounting/invoicing. Pros? Enough to watch? Yes, way too much with a PVR.

The biggest con of DStv is the lack of embracing new technology. It is disgusting that one can download the BBC shows in 16x9, but for the pleasure of R600 per month you can watch them in 4x3. New shows like Haven are ending up on Universal, again in 4x3, with no HD option.
Even TopTV has said that their lower targeted demographic are buying LCD TVs and demanding HD.
Two and a Half Men starts later this month ... season 7! USA is halfway through Season 8. Other satellite broadcasters seem to get all the shows. Where is Hawaii 5-0, Blue Bloods, Covert Affairs, Ghost Hunters, and Spartacus?
Their HD quality is pathetic compared to other broadcasters. They do pass a lot of stuff off as HD, where it is just SD upscaled.
A 4mbs HD download looks a lot better than their 10mbs broadcast.
They complete ignore complaints about quality on their own forums. People have been complaining about no 5.1 sound on Human Target for weeks (they use the dubbed soundtrack) and apparently they have screwed up the aspect ratio on Ellen every day for the last two weeks.
If you are not into sport, it simply is not worth R600. If they were an ISP everyone would have left them years ago.
