DSTV

@OP, Don't listen to the anti-DSTV drivel. Get the PVR, then record the programs you like and watch them at your leisure.

There is so much to watch, funny never when you want to watch it, therefore the PVR is brilliant.

We keep deleting because we can't seem to watch it all and we watch a lot of tv.

+1. Always stuff to watch with PVR.

+3 and I am a guy who watches way too much TV
MC bashing is a fashionable pass time in these parts. Not undeserving given the arrogance with which they treat customers, but it ought to be relevant and people mustn't troll every related thread with outright bull**** just cause MC is involved.

I have to agree with BigAl-sa to a certain extent. Besides the live soccer (which is the only reason I pay R500+ per month), Dstv is an absolute waste for me.
In the beginning you will enjoy it and wonder why you didn't get Dstv sooner but after a few weeks (maybe months) you'll be quietly trying to justify why you still have it.

With that eye thingy, just don't split the signal going from the decoder to the far-away TV, then it works fine.
As soon as you split it, the voltage supplied by the decoder is ~halved and the eye does not have enough power to operate.

Hi Dave,

if you install a dc blocker (about R10) on the cable not connected to the eye you won't have a problem.

Sorry for off topic comment

Ok cool thanks for the advice. It seems most places the decoders are going for R1999. Does anyone know of anywhere cheaper?

Also I see the decoder has a USB port, can you play stuff through the decoder?

You'll probably only be able to get for a R100 cheaper at best, so maybe just take the 1999. And the USB port is inactive, apparently reserved for future use (whatever that may mean).

Deals direct are selling them for R1795

If there is not enough on DSTV for you to watch then you watch way to much TV or have a very limited list of interests. Between sport, series & documentaries it keeps me well entertained

Just responding to the BigAl bashers: I switched on the decoder at about 1300 to catch up on the cricket, and it just happened to be on ch108, showing the *new* NCIS. That particular series had already been on last year.

You guys must have really short memories.

no one said they werent showing repeats, or that the the most perfect tv provider in the world, like it or not with the competition they have in this country unfortunalty dstv is the best (which im sure some one will is not saying much) but when i sit down to watch i have something to watch, be it on live tv or something i recorded, also at 1300 on a weekday im at work so not realy concered with an old tv series playing at that time :)

So in other words you switched right over to the cricket so you had something to watch all afternoon, so no problem there ;)

Just want to add something. Sky and Foxtel subscribers also complain about repeats...

They have many millions more subscribers than DStv. It happens everywhere on pay TV. Recently, there was this letter on MyNews24 and there was all these unreasonable comments from pissed of subscribers, crucifying DStv. No facts or figures to back up their crazy statements. When I tried to correct some of them, I got attacked personally. Most of them watch way too much TV. I've said this before... Though there are some issues, DStv is not doing a bad job of bringing us pay TV in a 3rd world country. They are miles ahead of most providers in other similar 3rd world countries. If you can't afford the subs and don't like the service, cancel. Simple.

I did not bash you personally because your criticism has no merits and is not worth responding to.

For all the DSTV Bashers:

1. I think DSTV is overpriced. I wish it was R400 instead of R600 (for DSTV Premium with PVR)
2. Repeat patterns on DSTV are no different than other international broadcasters
3. DSTV, while over-priced is actually one of the best services available worldwide. I've travelled overseas and seen what other operators offer. Do some research. The same people who normally complain about dstv also complain about how 'backward' SA is.
4. There is only so much content available and DSTV shows virtually all of it
5. Multichoice (DSTV) has licensed all the good content which makes it impossible for others like TOP TV or the defunct Telkom Media to try to compete. That's bad for competition and bad for price reductions, but good if you want to watch all your favourite shows on 1 platform i.e. dstv. Imagine if Top TV licensed one of your favourite shows, as a DSTV subscriber, you'd be ticked off. This used to happen when SABC had a bit of a budget to compete. The herd always bring up NCIS repeats on the Universal Channel (Formerly Hallmark). NCIS was originally picked up by SABC2, which screened the show at peculiar times in an erratic schedule, which I suppose is better than failing to buy the rights to subsequent seasons like they did with Stargate SG1. After the rights to NCIS became available, either DSTV opted against buying it or Hallmark (Yes Hallmark/Universal Channel is a seperate international channel) outbid them. Either way, it's one show out of fifty/ a hundred? It's not that good IMO. Used to watch it, but I ahve Season 4 & 5 on DVD for over a year and still haven't watched it.

HERE'S WHAT I LIKE ON DSTV:
A) Shows on MNET, MNET Action, Vuzu, MNET Series: Human Target (Current Fav), CSI, CSI NY, CSI Miami, 24, Fringe, Private Practice, Greys Anatomy, Vampire Diaries, Cougar Town, Entourage, V, The Mentalist, The Good Wife, The Event, Lie to Me, Californication, Weeds, How to Make in America, Wipeout, Legend of the Seeker, Persons Unknown, (Note some are now finished)

In addition, the wife likes: Army Wives, Brothers & Sisters, The Closer, Chuck, Ghost Whisperer, No Ordinary Family, Gossip Girl, Damages, NCIS LA, Mercy, Three Rivers, Ugly Betty, Castle, 90210, True Blood, Tudors, Rita Rocks, Better with you

B) SPORT
Barclays Premier League - At least 7 live matches per weekend
La Liga - At least 4 live matches per weekend, plus bundesliga, French Ligue 1
ESPN - MLB Baseball, ESPN Soccernet Presspass
Every major live sports event there is including Soccer, Tennis, Golf, Rugby (Sucks), Cricket (Sucks)

C) DOCUMENTARIES
Discovery & National Geograhic: Extreme Engineering, Wheeler Dealers, Earth Investigated, Ultimate Survival, etc. etc. etc.

D) NEWS
CNN shows like AC360 and Fareed Zakaria GPS, BBC: Click, Middle East Business Report

E) OTHER
Auto Mundial, MUSIC: MTV, VH1, & DMX

F) KIDS
Plenty kids channels

I haven't even mentioned movies, because we don't have time to watch movies.

So in conclusion, you can complain about the price of DSTV. You can complain about issues like broadcast quality in certain instances, etc But it's illogical to complain about content. I've been a subscriber for well over 10 years and never had any problems, no billing issues, nothing. They don't listen to criticism, but in general they do get things right.

R600 for DSTV is no grudge purchase.
