DStv's 2023 nightmare

Are they seriously blaming load shedding? How about 1000's of repeats of Bourne, Fast and Furious franchise and dubbed crap bought cheaply, to fill airtime, then charging an ever increasing premium for it! All they've got is sport, if not fir that, no one would have DSTV!

About it - and even then I get to watch most of the sport that interests me, without out them. If they where not so ridiculous with their prices, I would not miss anything, but it is what it is.

The writing has been on the wall for a long time. Even though the streaming services have become fragmented by the big players, it's still cheaper to get the main ones instead of DSTV premium and have more content than you'll have time to go through. If they pivot to the sports only provider like many have been crying out for years, there may still be hope.

They too greedy for that, also that comes with a different set of challenges.

Not sure what the best solution for the current issues are. Each has it's challenges and pitfalls, the current model has been pushed as hard, it it can be for way too long. Some thing is going break, and there will be chaos for awhile, till a system emerges that keeps all parties happy.

DStv disaster

"Nightmarish" would be an apt description for the year South Africa's biggest pay-TV provider — DStv — endured in 2023.

The broadcaster saw its subscribers in South Africa and profits shrink in its interim results for the six months ending September 2023.
I have had the luxuary to be able to have dstv since its inception. In 2004 I wanted to down grade as the repeats were to much. They said there contract was 1 view, 1 repeat and 1 showing for missed clientele.
To date you as everything in life when it comes to government you simply have no choice...In 2004 it cost you R242.00 for 2 extra Britich BBC channels. Hense tipping poi t kept me in PREMIUM.
To date this exists adding no option for sports lovers. We all care for soccer and rugby.
Now it has fallen to a disgrace where you think we stupid that EVERY SINGLE program is repeated to exhaustion when babies have families in episodes and the level if dishonoured for the paying customer is appalling that you occasionally throw us an OLD bone as deem this is acceptable. DSTV you fall into the category of THIEVES as you dont honour your side. And you wonder why we dropping you one by one. DISGRACE IS THE UNDERSTATEMENT. YOU SHOULD ALL WHI BENIFITS FROM OUR PAYMENTS BE ARRESTED AND THROWN IN JAIL FOR FRAUD. BECAUSE THIS IS FRAUD STEALING OUR MOBEY AND NOT DELIVERING A SERVICE.

Bye. Bye, DSTV. You have abused and overstated your welcome. Find a partner to acquire you. You messed up and continue to do so.

Tbh Piracy. Napster forced the music industry to change. Aggregators are doing a better job at making content available than the actual service providers!

Aggregation might work ... , just not DSTV's current version thereof.

They still own sport, the only thing people still make time for to watch live. They'll be fine until they lose their stranglehold on that. Still disappointed we didn't get the Rugby World Cup in 4K.

It's nothing to do with what they say all to crap programs which are repeated on different channels day in day out .give us what we pay for or lose even more

In fairness to them, judging from a perusal of Twitter, it didn't seem like there was a whole lot of broadcasters offering the RWC in 4K. We'll probably only see 4K for the FIFA World Cup until some better compression comes along to deal with the bandwidth issue.

Internationally EPL is offered in 4K (they ran test streams with it before the Fifa WC), F1 too (this is probably the easiest as Sky already does 4K and we already get their feed).

They're just cheap. Or maybe they wasted their budget on this that's not even being used to its full potential.

Regardless of how few broadcasters where offering it, it was available.

AV1 is about as good as compression gets at the moment. Hardware for it is rough tho.

Going the way of Blockbuster. Just not relevant anymore in an internet driven world where people can do on demand international content for cheap and they focus on local content for a hefty price.

Local content made for the local crowd, who don't pay for their electricity.

This scramble of theirs should've been initiated a few years back. They're going to learn the hard way.

It's harder to argue against the lack of 4K soccer considering its popularity. I guess 4K penetration is lacking at the moment? And Multichoice do have to do business with a weak currency unlike Sky.
