DStv's 2023 nightmare

AV1 is about as good as compression gets at the moment. Hardware for it is rough tho.
I'm guessing the bandwidth issue is more complex than just codecs? Even in the States, 4K NFL is limited, and that's the most watched TV programme in the world this side of cricket in India.

Are they seriously blaming load shedding? How about 1000's of repeats of Bourne, Fast and Furious franchise and dubbed crap bought cheaply, to fill airtime, then charging an ever increasing premium for it! All they've got is sport, if not fir that, no one would have DSTV!
Think you're watching too much TV there

Soccer is the most watched sport in the world, I think NFL just makes the top 10. If I remember correctly even Basketball is more popular than NFL
I was talking about a very specific kind of viewership, country specific to be exact. Basically, only cricket India and maybe some soccer in China is comparable to the NFL in the States.

The NBA is no match for the NFL, and it's been that way for most, if not all of the 21st century.

From your article
The NFL continued to be king on television sets across the United States in 2023.

Make up your mind

Soccer is what is called Football in the rest of the world.

I struggle with articulation, bear with me. The point I was making is that the NFL is the most viewed TV programme within a specific country anywhere in the world. The only comparable TV programming you'd find is the IPL in India, and maybe some soccer games in China. No sport attracts more people to sit down in front of their TVs to watch a single game in a specific country than the NFL.

1. Super Bowl LVII: Chiefs-Eagles (114.3M)
2. AFC championship: Chiefs-Bengals (53.12M)
3. NFC championship: Eagles-49ers (47.5M)
4. NFC divisional: 49ers-Cowboys (45.65M)
5. NFL on Thanksgiving: Commanders-Cowboys (41.76M):
6. AFC divisional: Bengals-Bills (39.32M)
7. AFC divisional: Chiefs-Jaguars (34.3M)
8. NFL on Thanksgiving: Packers-Lions (33.7M)
9. NFC wild card: Giants-Vikings (33.21M)
10. NFL on Christmas Eve: Cowboys-Dolphins (31.52M)

**TV sets, not people in the bracket

And I was making the point that even a sport with that kind of viewership has limited 4K coverage.

It doesn't come close to the football world cup final. In fact it gets smashed by about a billion.
Super bowl manages +- 200 million viewers world. World cup final in 2022 had 1.5 billion.

Champions League final also beats it with its 400 million world wide viewers .

NFL is the second most profitable sports league in the world but not close in terms of fans.

In terms of sporting events it doesn't make the top 5:

Were you replying to me? Because if you were, you'd have to go and read my post again to see that's not the comparison I was making.

And some lists of the biggest money making sport leagues in the world:

I think it's fair to say the NFL is number one.

This back and forth about American sport reminds me just how lucky we are to have the NFL and NBA on DSTV, there was a proper US sports dark age here in SA after ESPN pulled out of Africa between 2013-2020.

Does anyone ever watch that though?

Don't remind me. A painful time for the handful of us who follow US sports like that.

We do far to little against companies like this, unfortunately if they go down, the fat cats on top don't loose the millions they squeezed out of paying customers for a worthless product, they just go find another company to squeeze some more from some other dumb addicted customers. The few poor hard working people who keeps everything going will have to pay the price. Remember, the world is funded by people who can't afford it...

I'm pretty sure they're not going anywhere. Let's check back next January.

Oh no, another SA monopoly that abused it's position and failed to adapt and modernize is going down the toilet!? Say it ain't so!

You are not understanding what he is saying... which single country, of all the countries the Football World Cup showed in, had the highest number of viewers? Once you provide that, you can be arguing with him in the correct level.

Why are people paying if it is worthless? People should stop wasting their money on things that they think are worhtless.
