Has anyone noticed the sudden appearance (in addition to those laughable three channels they recently added, thinking it was a brilliant move?) of a few new channel numbers if you flip through DSTV? And these adverts of "watch this space!"?
So far I think I'll get more joy out of watching the additional kids' channel (FFS AFRO channel?! As if that sort of music isn't catered for by Channel O and MTV Base...What about those of us who actually like normal music...).
Nah, will give TopTV a few more months to settle in, see what they have lined up, and then bye-bye DStv. If TopTV could get the sports rights, I'd hazard a guess that DStv would um, 'pass' large bricks, sideways, to try and keep itself afloat.
Bring on the other operators, please, let's see this dinosaur gutted and killed...

I'm pretty happy with DSTV. My only gripe is the damn reruns on things like Top Gear, Mythbusters and all the cool shows. I have been watching the same bloody episodes now for months on end. Inbetween you get the "NEW EPISODE" but I mean honestly......

I'm on Select 1. Series aren't too bad. But I honestly enjoy Discovery World and national Geo most. Action is a joke. As is Universal channel. Showing the same stuff almost two years later is unforgiveable, based on the amount of films released each year. And the music! This will sound racist to some here, but seriously, MTV Base, Channel O and now Afro Music?! WTF? What about us Whities?? Why add to a genre that already has TWO channels on the lower 'bouquets'? Thing is, DSTV seems to have this fixation on quantity instead of Quality. Most of what they offer is complete and utter rubbish. If you actually look at what you watch, the cost of the exercise becomes very high.

DSTV Premium with SD PVR. Price is high but we love it. Great series and sport in particular.

Channel O and MTV Base are not Afro music channels, they mainly show hiphop and R&B.
Those lower bouquets are probably aimed at the emerging black middle class anyway... for "you whities" there's Premium.

I wouldnt say its "desperation". They know who they need to target in order to get new customers on board, and its not rich folk, its lower income black folk.

I am a black person and I think that what DStv is doing is very patronising to black people.

Because I am black I should be happy with additional channels aimed at me even though they are sub-standard. KidsCo is nothing compared to Nickloedeon, Boomerang, Cbeebies or Disney. Instead of releasing one of these great channels they give us the crappy KidsCo. The Africa Music channel is more of the same. There is enough already on Channel O, now more of it and I should be happy simply because there is more.

If DStv really wants to keep their current subscriber base they should consider giving at least one more Sports channel because this is one truly valuable content that they have over TopTV. Black people (sorry, those who cannot afford to pay through their noses for satellite TV) cannot watch sports like cricket, tennis, rugby and golf. This is that we need and not to be kept boxed up in soccer. Yes, if you haven't heard, black people also like to watch these sports. We can't even watch women's soccer, which they are showing on SS7. So much for promoting women's empowerment through the promotion for their sport contests.

It shows you what they think of women and black people.

Would you prefer an Oprah channel?

You are aware that Multichoice services the entire continent right? MTV Base is mostly American stuff, Channel O is mixed. This Afro Music Channel seems to be aimed at the Ghana urban market...

Just change the channel, and stop moaning. You would think your remote was broken the way you are complaining...

I would just like to comment on the OP... DStv is hardly desperate. Their subscriber base is still growing and will keep on growing, regardless of the launch of TopTV. The service is also improving (though it is a slow process), but they are still miles ahead of most other satellite TV service providers in developing nations. Obviously we can't compete with 1st world countries.

They will always say "we offer 140 channels" instead of "we offer 140 channels, of which about 5 have original content worth watching". So the higher they get that number, the better for advertising.

DStv desperate? Far from it. Call all their content and channels shyte if you like, they still have the market by the claps.

Actually, DStv is like VW with the Citi. VW got slanted for Citi safety so the shoved in a drivers airbag and called it safer. DStv is being slanted for lack of channels and content, so the shove in some garbage channels and call it new and fresh. And why would they care, all the while whist people grab up their R650 deal like hotcakes?
