In other words - A router/modem/firewall (often cr@p) wired with or without a switch to a decent wifi router/firewall/DHCP etc - WRT or microtik that services the Wifi. How common is this setup?

I recently reconfigured my home system after the latest new modem pain and trauma. Now I can switch the bloody thing out in 5 minutes :-) and I can switch the firewall off if I choose to.

As long as you don't Double NAT yourself it can usually be done.

Thing is you won't have two routers on your network (as in actually performing routing) but rather two boxes called routers doing different things.

You never want a router sitting behind another router.

You want a Modem + Router. Or Router + Access Point etc and keep only one actual routing device on your network otherwise you are in for kak.
