Good evening,

I have a 4mb capped line, with Telkom, and I frequently play online games.

One of these games would be League of Legends. The IP of the server I play on is 95.172.65.254.

I did a tracert to the server to see if there was any weird things going on in between the path between me and this EU server and my results were as follows:

Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7601]

C:\Users\Owner>tracert 95.172.65.254

Trace complete.

Now this is great and all as the times correlated nicely with my ping which should be about 170-190 ms. (Checked that in cmd too.)

The weird thing is that my ping in-game is about 700-900 ms.

I have checked whether I am on the right server, and I have checked whether that IP was indeed the IP of the server I play on. (Source: Here!)

Similarily, my ping (when connecting to the Team Fortress 2 server) is about 500 where it should be 20-50.

I live in the Durbanville area, and it's been going on for about 2 days now. Help me please!

Perhaps Telkom is shaping you heavily, while not shaping ICMP (ping) packets at all.

I'm in Tableview, and for the past couple of days been having same issue / sigh.
Pingtest times out. Speedtest shows normal pings, yet viewing the server list on steam for example :

Normally ping is 30 -50 !!!
500 plus ping to a server in cape town, something is wrong. Still have 10 gig left for the month

That's EXACTLY what my TF2 is doing. I honestly have no idea what is going on... :/

It looks like we may have similar issues.

@Pada we have had some serious rains and whatnot the last few days. Do you think that may have played a role in this? Doesn't heavy shaping go hand in hand with reaching a soft cap of some sorts?

Tionichm , have a look now and see if its better, seems slightly better at my end : 120 - 170 ping instead of 500 plus.

@Tionichm:
Rain shouldn't affect your ping/latency at all. It may cause instability/packet loss though!

If you have a capped account, then I'm not sure if you're going to be throttled, but you may still be shaped. I'd suggest that you try another ISP account and see if the latency is any better. Like you can get prepaid 1GB accounts or even free trial accounts from like WebAfrica/Afrihost.

The last few weeks I've also seen MTN (which is what Afrihost now uses) doing strange things on their network, where they'll route local traffic via London, which effectively boosts the latency to 500ms, instead of just like 50ms.
