DUN error 718

Hi,

I receive the following error when connecting via gprs:

First this message is displayed: Registering your computer on the network

Then this message appears: TCP/IP reported error 718: The connection was terminated because the remote computer did not respond in a timely manner.

I am using the following configuration:
Win XP Pro SP2
MSI Bluetooth dongle all bt drivers are reported as 5.1.2600.2180 i.e. microsoft drivers
Nokia 6820 phone
I have tried the nokia 6820 bt modem driver, but it reoprts a hardware failure. I am using the standard modem over bt driver for the modem (microsoft)
ZoneAlarm with BT network in the trusted zone. Even with Zonealarm off, the same connection error occurs.
Dialing *99#
Username and password blank

Any ideas how to get past this problem would be appreciated.
 
Have you entered the INIT string on the advanced tab of the bluetooth modem properties? Mine is... +cgdcont=1,"IP","internet" The number i use is.... *99***1#

OK

I managed to connect using the modem init string:
AT+CGDCONT=,,"internet"<cr>

I copied this initialising string from the nokia modem that I installed earlier.

Then it lost the connection after 5 minutes and now I get DUN error 718 again.
 
Fixed or is it?

I am typing this while connected over my bt modem and I have been connected for 6 minutes. The connection was giving me a hard time. I think it is resolved for now.

I think that the signal is too weak here.

Thanks Zerofocus for the tip on the modem init string and dial up number. I think your settings are working. Will take the phone an bt dongle home now, and try there because the cell signal should be stronger there. I am about 20km from the tower and have 2 or 3 bars signal strenth on the handset.

That is slow.

How can I improve it?
 
You are connecting over GPRS on CS1/2 and this speed is about right for such a GPRS connection.

There are a few options to go faster but all of them require the network to support it.

1) The tower is upgraded to CS 3/4.
2) The tower is upgraded to EDGE. You might need a new phone.
3) The tower is upgraded to 3G. You'll need a new phone as well.

What is the cell-id of the tower you're working with?
 
Montusi is the name of the cell. I am about 4-6km from the tower, although I can not see it, it is a bit behind a hill

I just tested my telkom dial up speed -

Below is the data used to calculate your download speed:

Download time: 185.297 seconds
Size of file: 500 KiloBytes
Estimated line speed: 22 (kilobits/second)
Estimated line speed: 2.7 (kiloBytes/second)

So the vodacom connection is a great improvement on this.

In terms of connection stability, the external antenna makes sense.

However, using a GPRS phone on a GPRS tower and getting full GPRS speeds, seems to indicate everything is working.

I would not call those things hills they are mountains at least thats what they were called when i was at school.

Go to the main site i.e. ditch the /vb on the URL. There's a link to speed test. Then do the Telkom local speed test, select the http one.

For local use Telkom speed test as mentioned

If you want to test international speeds, I have found http://internetfrog.com/mypc/speedtest/ to be quite a good site. It gives you plenty of other info re your connection other than just a speed test and it checks both upload and download speeds. And I like the little frog on the top ;)

Be carefull with using beach.vodacom4me.co.za. It's not directly connected to the 3G network and will give lower than real performance numbers.

For now rather use the Telkom speed test till we move beach right up to the APN.

B.t.w, how did you find out about beach.vodacom4me.co.za? :) It's an internal server....

Was told by one of the guys on the ground when he came to sort out my problems...
