Durban defends R6.5m website

The cost of developing the Durban city council's World Cup website has been described as exorbitant, but the council says the R6.5 million price tag is justified as it was not only for the website design and development but includes content, translation and state of the art technology.
 
What Sutcliffe means to say: "BS baffled our brains."
 
Would love to see what 'state of the art technology' can justify a price tag of R6.5m for a web site.

Maybe you get a Kruger Rand if you visit their web site?

So I suppose these morons think it takes R6.5 million to make #1 look like #2.

I mean really, #2 has pictures, come on guys, that is R1 Million right there. Pictures!
Let's not even talk about the planned mapping component. It is not like interactive mapping exists, right?

Google Maps or Live Earth could not possibly be used to do mapping, now could it?

- R1-million to host a site? Bull. Unless they're building their own data centre ... but then that would have a separate tender. If they are hosting themselves: Surely a backup generator would also have .... it's own tender, and not be bungled with the price of hosting. R1-mil for hosting ... That is just preposterous !!! Any excuse to enrich a family member.

Now, on to the next bit: filming.
Sure the cost of filming is high, but I'm no economist and even I can take nothing and make it sound like a lot, here goes:

10 x 30-second clips = a price
Now, just add "nothing" and get something to BS the public with:
100 x 300-second clips = Millions .

yaaay we did it. We got a number to bull the public with and do some money laundering while we're at it.
 
This project was not put out to tender.
It was a simple extension of an existing contract.
That is why we, the taxpayers, got ripped off.

Now if MS were really smart, they would do like Mozilla: native support for scriptable vectors (svg) and video.

As DblD, this site could have been done in about six weeks with Joomla!, and at a tenth of the price, probably.

they will update their weather "feed" once office hours start.... haha - manually!
