Durban Harbour Fire

Unlikely. The heat above a chemical fire is usually so intense the rain evaporates before it has a chance to wet.

Afraid so. Just like in a sprinklered building. If the fire gets too hot before the sprinkler is activated, it evaporates like steam.

Clearly the big dark cloud I can see from my office is not a cloud after all...

In some applications a fine mist is used to combat fires, like server rooms oddly enough because the fine mist not only collects smoke (which causes most of the damage) and also doesn't short electronics. It is effective because the mist quickly evaporates, expands roughly 1700 times and in doing so displaces all the oxygen near the fire. Only effective in relatively closed off spaces however, a fire like this the steam will of course be above the fire moving ever upwards.

Since when do they use water even mist in server rooms, standard practice has always been argon based gas fire suppression system, definitely news to me.

WATCH: Durban engulfed in smoke as massive fire breaks out in Rossburgh

The blaze broke out at a factory along South Coast Road - south of Durban. Several emergency services have responded to the scene.

Rescue Care's Garrith Jamieson says thick, black smoke is billowing into the sky - and can been seen from as far as the Pinetown and Westville areas.

"At this stage, the contents of the factory are unknown. However, the fire is extremely volatile, and the wind is hampering firefighters work at the scene. One person has been treated and stabilised on scene by paramedics, and is currently on his way to hospital for further care," he said.

South Coast Road remains gridlocked.

PICS: Durban building on fire

Durban - A warehouse is on fire in Rossburgh, Durban, paramedics said on Friday.

- Are you there? Send us your eyewitness accounts and photos.

It is thought that the facility belongs to Transnet.

Rescue Care paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said they are currently on the scene.

Firefighters are trying to extinguish the fire, said Jamieson.

Jamieson just said that the SAPS Search and Rescue Unit confirmed there were wax panels inside the warehouse “hence making it hard for the fire department to contain the fire”.

He said so far one worker had been found to be injured.

Black smoke could be seen billowing into the sky and massive flames could been seen in a video sent via WhatsApp to News24 by Zwe Cele, a motorist who drove past South Coast Road, where the building is situated.
