The city of Durban has been confirmed as historic host of the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

The announcement was made in Auckland, New Zealand on Wednesday.

It will be the first time an African city hosts the Commonwealth Games.

Canadian city and previous host Edmonton withdrew from the 2022 race in February, citing oil price-related financial concerns, leaving the South African port as the only bidder.

"A historic decision for all of us and one that my commission completely endorses," newly-elected Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) president Louise Martin told the organisation's general assembly in Auckland.

The next Commonwealth Games will be held at Australia's Gold Coast in 2018.

Oh man....I was just about to post this! :(

I am not sure why we are so proud of ourselves. Durban was the only city in the running for goodness sakes. It is like that all smug when you have one the 100m dash ... except you were the only one running it.

Anyway ... congrats to Durbs and hope they make a success of it.

Would love to see the proposed Budget for this... will search for it later.

Has any major event held in SA ever made a profit and not left ratepayers/taxpayers with a heavy debt burden?

They mentioned on 702 that Durban will be spending R2 Million getting ready. Most facilities are there, they just need to be upgraded ... but R2 Million sounds very little. Hell, just a decent house in a nice neighborhood costs that!

Billion, the plan is to spend R2 billion.

I don't think that many big sporting event makes a 'profit'. This is mainly as people would want the short term ticket sales to offset the long term costs of builing venues.

wake me up when the police go on strike again right before the event! :D

That would be much closer, yes.

The "people" part bothers me. Did the people of Durban have a referendum about this? Were they informed in detail of the additional amounts they would have to pay every month for the next ten or so years for the "privilege" of hosting this event? As was posted earlier (and I will check up on it) it was said that all facilities are already in place. So there does not appear to be any assets for future benefits.

Mark Alexander, the chairman of the 2022 bid committee, said the country had hosted 11 major sporting events and said the games would cost R6.4bn - a figure to be forked out by the three tiers of government and the South African Sports Olympic Committee (Sascoc).

“So if you look at the R6.4bn and then look at the economic projection, it is important to not only look at the expense, but at the economic impact. We are looking at R25bn here - 220 000 tourists who will be here to spend pounds; it’s going to be big,” he said.

---> I would be very very happy if that R25 billion realised!!

Still waiting for my referendum invite.... I think it will be an amazing spectacle, not sure the cost will ever be justified in a country with our social and economic issues.

I've heard this morning that Moses will be the main venue whilst the Pool that is located on the golden mile will be used for aquatics.

I have a flat where the pools are been upgraded. Now do I sell closer to the time or rent it out.

King's Park pool? Or do you mean the municipal pools that are currently empty?

Eish, never mind

Moses Mabhida Stadium will play a major role in the hosting of the games, while the Rachel Finlayson Swimming Complex, just a few kilometres away on the promenade, will serve as the aquatics centre.

Seems like a waste with Kings Park pool just across from Moses...

From past, bitter experiences we have learned that the projected R2 billion will inflate to over R8 billion once all the greed-driven tenders are awarded. Towards the end, there will be tons of urgent fund release requests to complete the job, skyrocketing the costs.

Since when is it politically correct for South Africa to celebrate the Commonwealth (formely known as the British Commonwealth of Nations), a vestige of the colonial and imperial rule of England?

I would have though the Marxist / Stalinist elements running the ANC and EFF would have been jumping onto their soap boxes decrying this as another colonial plundering of our resources (tax payers money). Ahhh, but wait, its the fair skinned descendants of these colonizers who will be fitting the bill, as they are the tax base. The connected Zulus will simply cash in with the tenders.

I wont be surprised to find out in the near future that those who built Nkandla will be awarded the building contracts.

No, the people didn't get to decide, but we aren't Switzerland.

Durban's plan calls for upgrades, not new venues. Some have called for a velodrome, but SASCOC has said that the UCI would need to fund it.
