Durban Wireless Community making waves

I imagine if government had handed out 500 one million rand grants to small wireless enthusiast groups rather than to sad old Sentech the county and rural areas might have decent and affordble wireless coverage.

Well done to our friends in Durban for doing it right! :)

100%! I had a meeting a while ago with Neotel about assisting us, and bottom line is although they apparently have huge community responsibilities attached to their sno status, they cant help us at all because we mostly cover middle to upper class areas, not poorer rural areas. Which is kind of ironic since without assistance and being purely community driven, we can't afford to reach those communities!

well done to all the people that have helped DWC grow over the years.
it takes a community effort

Sounds really promising. just a word of very good advice to the club, though I'm sure you may have guessed this..a windy dry and copious amounts of heavy duty tin foil maketh not a good antenna!

hehe I take it you tried that.

We did play with building our own antenna's but found it far easier just to buy them. in the end it is not that much more expensive to buy an antenna and you know it will work.
but nothing wrong with playing and learning

Is the DWC still running ?? the site seems to be extremely out of date!!

still going.
We are planning to do a major (much needed) overhaul of the site. just need to get one of the members to get onto it :)

There isn't but the idea of a WUG is to setup a small network in your area to connect to other networks and grow like that.

let me know if you need help creating a network in that area.
go to http://www.wug.za.net and plot yourself on there.

Am keen to get involved with DWUG - please PM me if you need the site renovated. Based in Durban North looking to join the grid if possible.
