Hi Guys

We bought a BENQ DVD writer. Now we need to burn 30 copies of
our non-profit video and give to people at random, when I went to the
store they asked me whether I want minus or plus DVD-R

What is this and what do that mean ?

Thanks
DD

I prefer the DVD-R for videos - they are supported on more DVD players. The DVD+R is faster, but normally used to transfer files between computers.

Couldn't say that any better.but check your dvd rom, if it does support both formats.Today most do support both, just double check.

What is the model of the BenQ DVD Writer you have? Should say on the box.
- i.e. the BenQ range is DW1800, DW1810, DW1655, DW1650, DW1640 & DQ60
All these models are Multi-format, so they can burn both DVD-R and DVD+R discs - rather go with the DVD-R discs as suggested by Franna - are more likely to be compatible with more set-top DVD players...

I forgot what I use to buy - or + because I don't backup to disc anymore only to harddrives but I think it's -

If I understand correctly it has to do with the way the discs are manufactured, so the +R supports higher burn speeds and double layer as well.

DVD-R would be fine, however I prefer using DVR+R. It's kind of nice burning an entire DVD in two minutes :)

+R offers better data storage reliability, they way info is burned on the tracks allows for more redundancy and parity info and should any physical damage occur, +R offers more chance of recovery. Google for it, there are some
technical explanations for all of this.

At present most DVD players should be able to read both plus and dash formats, since both standards are mature and well established.

My 2001 Pioneer DVD player reads DVD+R perfectly.

These days it's not really important what type of disc (DVD+R or DVD-R) you use for your DVD's. This is because most DVD writers and the burner software, like Nero can change the book-type to DVD-ROM. By doing this for either your DVD+R or DVD-R dics it ensures better compatibility on most DVD players, especially the older units.

Me personally prefers DVD+R for the speed, but always change the book-type to DVD-ROM.

Thanks for the reply guys..

How would I know if a DVD has is a + or - if someone gives me a video
on it..

THanks
DD
