dvd player with usb advice needed

i am looking for a dvd player with usb primarily to connect an ext hard drive to play movies on the ext drive. I have 2 lg dvd hdd recorders. With these one has to copy from the ext drives to the internal drive of the recorder - and then it does not playback most formats. So essentialy i am looking for a machine that will play almost any format directly from an ext hard drive.
Any ideas ?

I have a Philips like that, very good. Has HDMI output and HD Upscaling too. Costs around R700 a few years ago.

You're looking for a media player.

Visit any computer/tech store and ask for it.
You can get one with or without a HDD.

The iomega/apacers at IC and Game play almost all formats.

not everything.I have a Samsung that has issues with mkv and m2ts files.

Media player is the way to go.

Same with entry level lcd's like the 503's. Only music and pic support. Same goes for entry level BR players

Yes but they're a lot more expensive, the good ones at least. A proper bluray player plays everything a media player does, plus bluray discs, for less money. Plus the Samsung ones support Plex too.

My media player came with a HDD and was half the price of the Bluray.
All depends on what the OP wants to spend, as a decent WD media player can be picked up for R1K.

Can pick up a blue ray player for like 1k, got a philps one for y dad and it played mp4 and mkvs fine.

In my opinion rather by a cheap PC,install a cheap graphics card and sound card. Then install XBMC which will give you a superb interface. Then by a remote, you can use a PS3 bluetooth remote as well. This is the best option as you can always upgrade the PC as time goes on and you will never have any codec problems ever. PC Is the best option you can even install openelec which essentially turns the PC into a fully working media player
