Makro does have it. Looked at it a couple of weeks ago. Price was in the order of R2600, if I remember correctly. This was the 400GB model.

So I decided to go with a Sony (RDR-HX750) DVD recorder (R2199 at Makro).

When I got home, I opened the box, and the machine is a Region 3 player ... very nice ... NOT!
Checking the Sony SA site, it is not listed as a supported model ... so my reasoning is that Makro is turning into the next Hi-Fi Corp, importing products directly which are not supported by the local manufacturers/dealers

You could have gotten a GeCube Standalone Portable HDD-Based Video Recorder for R843 excluding a HDD @Take2

Got mine at Makro a few months ago for R3600.

The machine is very quiet and the HDMI connection to the plasma looks brilliant, but I hate the fact that edited recordings can not be copied to dvd in "FAST" mode. The machine insists on copying it at the same speed it was recorded.
So imagine me converting my VHS Prison Break recordings to dvd

Landy, have you tried doing a google on it to multi-region it? When the recorders with the built in hard drives first came out, Sony didn't supply us with software nor could we find anything on the internet on the subject, but it's more than two years later now, so I'm sure someone would've cracked it by now.

I am looking at buying one of these (from Makro), which is how I found this post. However, I see Sony lists this model on their SA site, with suggested retail price of R2999.

Since it seems to satisfy all the features I wanted, and since I have a Bravia 37" LCD, the TheatreSync feature may actually be of some use, I am considering it ...

So, what have you found out since buying it?

I bought one from Hi-Fi corp a few months ago , I think I paid just below R3000. But I do not recommend this model to friends.

While the built quality of this dvd recorder is in fact excellent like many other LG products.
It has inconvenient design flaws, it does not have an internal clock with battery backup - every time loadsheding comes or power goes off for even a few secs. you have to set the clock again or all recording schedule stops . And to use timer schedule recording
the recorder has to be turned off into standby mode or it does not record anything you programme:( .

I also bought a Wharfedal 160 Gb recorder from Hi-fi corp ,this model I am happy & cost only around R2200

The reason I write this - I wish someone gave me this advice a few month ago .

Some feedback on the Sony:

The region issue appears to not be an issue ... it plays all my son's DVDs without a problem. The recording quality is much better than my old Pioneer, plus the fact that it was able to read the raw data from the Pioneer DVDs made it possible to dub everything from the disks to HDD for easy viewing later.

One feature that I love about it is the fact that it puts in chapters at scene changes, ie. when recording CSI, it will chapter it when it goes to advertisements, plus a couple inbetween, and then chapter it again when it goes back to the CSI starting logo ... very useful for skipping through all the ads.

Overall I am very happy ... very good value for money imo

Hmm, that is just retarded from LG's side ... the Sony (and Pioneer) had battery backup for the clock, as well as allow you to play some tracks and as soon as recording time comes, it just starts recording, no problems.

Thanks man. I will consider this model - seems like a good price as well.

One thing tho' - did you play any divx files via your usb? How is that functionality?

divx - no, I haven't tried that yet.

Bang for buck I reckon you can't go wrong

just to clear up a previous post - this is a official sony SA product. Just spoke to the product manager at SOny and they sold Makro a huge consignment of these at reduced cost hence makro's price being lower that RRP.
