just to clear up a previous post - this is a official sony SA product. Just spoke to the product manager at SOny and they sold Makro a huge consignment of these at reduced cost hence makro's price being lower that RRP.

The confusion comes in wrt to the Sony website ... according to the website, this is not a SA market product, but meant for Asia

Well I am totally pissed at myself ... I bought this recorder today and rented out a dvd to check it out ... bam! It does not play. It is region code blocked - how can makro sell a dvd recorder that is of a different region code ... I feel so cheated ...

anyone managed to make it region free ... if not I am returning it to makro and will give them a piece of my mind!

just goes to show - if something is too good to be true - then it inevitably is not!

Didn't you maybe rent a non-region 2 disc? I've seen some in video shops

no - it says region 2 on the disc. just in case i will try another dvd to make sure.

I am certain the the unit is region 3 cos it says so in the back.

The thing is - this unit rocks. It really is solid and pack with nice features - pity it is region three.

How teh hell can makro sell a region 3 unit - are they retarded? I am gonna make them an offer of R500 for the unit - as is.

ok guys ... I am happy again ... damn the customer support at Sony is awesome. Sent someone over to have it done - 5 minutes later dvd recorder is zone free and I am smiling.

If anyone buys this unit (which is going for a good price imo), take it to sony or call them to flash the unit.

later.

That was my first concern with the unit ... it says region 3 on the box, so I was not impressed when I got home and noticed this. The first thing I did was pop a couple of my kid's DVDs in the machine, and they all played. Maybe mine is already unlocked?

Well, if this does happen to me, I will definitely give them a call

Thanks guys for this thread as I just bought a LG RH-278 from Makro and you pointed me to the fact that it looses its timer due to a power failure or load shedding.
Will return it tomorrow as I am not prepared to live with this design shortcoming in times when load shedding is a fact of live for the next couple of years.

You made my day.:)

Hmm, that is just retarded from LG's side ... the Sony (and Pioneer) had battery backup for the clock, as well as allow you to play some tracks and as soon as recording time comes, it just starts recording, no problems.

Not to mention the ridiculous excuse for the controls on the LG unit - little led's that you have to press. You have to press the led first for it to light up and then press it again to operate the function - problem is that when the led's are not lit (they time out after a while) you have no idea which control is which so you have to hap hasardly press somewhere in the vicinity of the controls to get the whole lot light up so you can see which control to press.
Plays Divx fine though, but not happy with my unit - the clock being a major pita.
On the plus side, it plays DVD's fine and also +-R/RW without a hitch. Also has upscaling to 780p & 1080i

Happy Guy thanks to MyADSL

I have returned the LG recorder and Makro refunded my money without any arguments.

When the salesman asked why I returned it, he didn't even know of the problem with LG loosing the settings with a power outage and he suggested I take the Sony RDR HX 750 B instead.

Makro's price for the Sony is R2199,99 at the moment, but they were prepared to meet the special price of New World Menlyn at R1999,99.

I am happy, thanks to MyADSL and you the forumites, who spared me of a disappointment later.:):D

If anyone is interested in buying a Sony, get it at Makro for R2199.99 or New World Menlyn for R1999.99

Is the SONY any good ?

I replaced My 250GB LG RH1999H with the 400GB LG RH299H because the first one refused to write anymore discs after 13 Months.
Now the bloody new one wont write in fast mode anymore after 2 Months ( keeps giving a disc error, no matter what make of blank DVD you insert for fast mode)

Im sick of LG

In my experience, it's a good habit to run a DVD lens cleaner through your optical equipment once a month or so, especially if there's a fair amount of dust in the air where the unit is kept. The RDR's have fans to cool the units and unfortunately this tends to cause dust particles to be suck into the case which sometimes settles on the lens and causes issues. Same goes for all optical drives, really and most of the time the lens is the bit that goes first, in my experience.

Tried it on both machines a whil ago, no luck
If it's still under warranty take it to LG direct and have it repaired. I had similiar issues and they changed the laser optic drive, or something to that affect and the players been working every since...

My LG also had problems after a year. Could not write discs etc. I took the hard drive out and built myself an HTPC, much happier now.

The first one died 1 month after warranty expired

2nd one is still under warranty since its brand new

Ofcourse its the hassle of now getting time off work to go and get it handed in to LG, and then the wait to have it fixed.

The net is full of posts of LG's with this problem
Was hoping the latest ones would have it fixed

Seriously thinking of just dumping it for a SONY

Have nowq found that if I fill the first 20min of a DVD using "slow" speed dubbing on the 2nd machine, it will then do "high" speed dubbibg for the rest of the disc.

But it keeps giving errors if you try high speed dubbing on the first 20min of any disc.

1st machine wont even Initialize a disc

Perhaps a firmware upgrade would do the trick. Not sure where to find it though...
