Hi guys,

I'm looking to buy a DVD recorder, but it seems that no one on the market at the moment has a dvd-recorder with networking support....

Am I asking too much?

Anyone have any gripes with LG's RH399H 320GB DVD recorder?

Yikes! I have never seen such an Animal!

Best you can do is to put an external hard drive that has both NAS and USB next to the DVD recorder and plug that into the DVD recorder. But I dunno if I have seen any NAS that also have USB support. I am sure they are out there... but never seen one.

Not sure about the RH299 and RH399 - the RH1999 I have is rather good, but doesn't have network support.

I recall a manufacturer called Linksys that does the Kiss DP558 recorder that has network support - seems to have lots of useful features -- but not sure if it's available in SA. I used to see their products on Kalahari.net, but not any more...

Does anyone know if there's a place in SA that makes or can get custom wall plates... like in the picture below...

pros, cons
I'm thinking of buying one

Yeah, i got one back in July already...

TOTALLY wonderful player... so far it has played everything i've thrown at it... both Divx and Xvid... plays .mpg's as well without any problems.

The only problem i have with it is that if your movies are divx'd with a low bitrate, they look really sucky when played on a tv screen, so sacrifice a little space and bump up the bitrate...

the USB port is a lovely addition, but it's only a USB 1.1 port so copying anything via the USB port takes *ages*!

But otherwise wonderful player... i would recommend it to anyone looking to get one...

also, once the warranty has expired, you can easily upgrade the hard drive :-D

and it's not too hard to convert it to a region-free player either... :-D

LG RH399H Region Codes

Hey there,

Please can you advise on that process for removing the region coding on the RH399H.

Cheers
Marc

OK, Here's what you need to do...

There's a small ISO file you need to get to write onto a cd and then play it with your dvd recorder to unlock it... but the website where I got the file is no longer around...

I'll look at home and try get the iso for you...

Just send me a pm with your email address and I'll send it to you...

All you need do is put the disk in your player, it'll start playing it automatically and bring up a pop-up box asking you what region you want to change to.... change to Region 0 and you're done :-D

RH299H

Hi folks,

I fell for the RH299H option around a year ago and when my recorder started giving problems (obviously just outside the supplier's 1yr warr), I took it to the LG dealer directly. I was told that they are getting awaiting the parts from JHB, but received a phone call today to advise that they need to either get it from overseas (no guarantees), or replace my RH299H (400gb) recorder with the RH399H (320gb) recorder as the RH299H has apparently been discontinued.

How do you find the RH399H unit as I obviously do not want to downgrade (size-wise), but don't exactly have a choice in the matter, now do I?

Rgds,
M

That's a bummer, but all may not be lost - do a google search on the LG models you listed as you may be able to increase the HDD size of your new RH399H, if you decide totake it. My RH1999 came with a 250GB HDD and I swapped it for a larger 320GB, so I should think a similar thing could be done with your two models mentioned. The only thing you'd need to do is format/initialise the new HDD once installed - this would mean that all the data is erased, so make sure that there is nothing you want to keep on it...

It is a very simple matter to change the HDD on your dvd recorder... naturally tho you will lose any information you have on the old and new disks, so I would HIGHLY advise backing up to dvd or something suitable.

The DVD recorders take IDE drives and they're currently up to just over 1TB, so more space is not a problem...

Just please bear in mind that changing the hard drive will most definitely invalidate your warranty...

The RH399H is a wonderful unit, although the performance of the front USB port is a downer, being only USB 1.1, but it can still play movies, music and pictures from the USB port, it just takes a while to get going.

I've had mine since july and have thrown 90% of the movies on my pc onto it and there's still like 200GB free... so the drive is more than capable.

The device also has the quickest startup of the one's i've seen, my dad's one take just over 6 minutes from pressing the button to usable.... whereas mine does the same thing in under 2 minutes...

All they are really missing from these devices is Ethernet or WLAN capability...

I see that Frontosa are listing the KiSS DP-1600 Network HD multimedia + DVD player on their latest pricelist -- maybe they might be able to source the DP558... :)

Battery Backup?

I am very happy with my LG RH399H Recoder. There is just one shortcoming of this product. It has no battery backup in case of a power failure. And when switch of it does not display the time.

I have this model and have been happy with it up till now but have just discovered that I cannot play all region DVDs with it. Does anyone have a hack to change it so it plays multi regions? I seem to recall that when I bought an LG DVD player years ago, I had a similar problem and then learnt somewhere (probably mybroadband) that one just has to punch in a number on the remote to convert it. But now I can't remember the number and don't know if the same thing would work on the recorder. Advice please.

Ja, I agree about no battery backup. It's a darn nuisance to set the time whenever the power goes off. We have lots of lightning and I disconnect when there's a storm, then later have the whole palaver of setting the time.

PM TrueTenacity and see if he can help you with the ISO image - see his post earlier in this thread

Not sure if any of these work - I take no responsibility for any of these below - use at your own risk!

Give these a try:
Option 1
MULTI-REGION CODE
Door Tray Open
On the remote control press 0, 0, 0
Select Region Code by pressing 0 for all regions
Press Pause

Option 2
Go to Menu -> Settings -> Lock icon -> “00000000″

Option 3
Click on the Home button of the remote control.
Using Left & Right arrow keys on the remote, browse to the Settings menu.
Move down over the Lock icon, don’t click it, just move over it.
Enter “0000″

Option 4
Call LG and ask them?
