Unfortunately the HDD on Philips crashed a week ago, and now I can't find a Philips recorder anywhere!!!
Any comments!
What about replacing the HDD with a new one? - It should be a standard 3.5" PC HDD - what was the capacity of the one that crashed, and was it a PATA or SATA hard drive connection? You may have to open the unit and check the connectors.
Once established, post here and I'm sure one of the dealers can help you with a replacement HDD for your philips....

Thanks Howardb. I have removed the HDD from the Philips. I don't know how check whether it's a SATA, PATA or IDE connecttion and it doesn't say on the cover. The make of the HDD is a Western Digital and 160GB in capacity.
If I do replace the HDD with a similar one, would it just work, or do I need to copy firmware or some software onto it before installing it in the recorder?

Hey superairborne,
The different connectors look like these below:
You won't need any firmware or software at all - just unplug the old drive (data and power connectors) then replace and reconnect the cables. Be careful of the cables as they are flimsy depending on your model.
Power on only once all the covers, etc are re-assembled, and it should boot as normal and ask if you want to format the HDD (if you don't get this message, go to the menu and format the HDD)
It won't make any difference on the brand of the HDD - if yours is a 160GB, it should also be able to take a 250GB or 320GB HDD too - I swopped my 160GB on an LG Recorder I have and replaced it with a 320GB, so I have plenty space now!

Thannks for all your help, however, I installed the new HDD the way you explained, but nothing happens - the machine won't finish it's booting process. I guess it's buggered!!

I've seen something quite nice with this model. When the power goes off, and the machine looses its time, and you have to set in the time when the power goes back on, it actually doesn't loose its timer recording entries that you have preset. Very cool!

I would like it more if it didn't lose the time. It's a nuisance having to reset.

Does anyone know where I can download a manual for an LG RH399 DVD recorder.
I am considering buying one but would like to check out what it can do first before I buy.

From the LG website, under Manual...just select "DVD&Video&Set top" and the model "RH399H". Size is 2.2MB.

Don't get this recorder
Guys for the love of all things sweet, don't buy this piece of hardware (I nearly said something else here!). My wife bought it for me for my birthday in September 09. I have been thoroughly disappointed with it and I took it back to Makro the other day hoping that they can send it back to LG for a firmware update or something. We have a Wharfedale recorder before that eventually started acting up. But the Wharfedale totally klaps the LG in terms of features, even though it cost literally half the price.
Here is my list of shortcomings on this device:
1) When you are watching something you have recorded, and the drive wants to record something that you set it to record on the timer, you get a notice saying 10 minutes to recording, then 5 minutes to recording and then bang - the drive just stops playing what you are watching, and switches to the show about to be recorded! You then have to FIND your show you were watching again (and on a 320GB drive this can take a while), find where you were and resume watching.
2) To make the above point more annoying, with our Wharfedale, when you stopped playing a recorded show halfway, you could come back to it days later, and there was an option to resume your viewing from where you last got to. With the LG, no such luck. If you have done anything like turn off the drive, watch another show etc, you cannot resume. You have to find where you last were! Arrggggghhhhhh!
3) To make 1 and 2 even worse, even though I specified that the recorder ought to put in chapter markings every 5 minutes, this feature never worked. So if you have a 4 hour show recorded, you have to sit forwarding through the entire thing to get to where you were! The chapters don't work.
4) Timeshift recording - this did something super odd. With our Wharfedale, you pressed the record button, and kept pressing it to make it record 30 mins, 60 mins, 90 mins etc. With the LG, if you did this, it would do timeshift. To record for a predetermined length of time, I had to turn OFF the drive and then try again. Only then does it work. I have read the (almost unintelligible) chinglish manual too.
5) Lack of functions - no zoom for example. There are a few others that I cannot think of right now.
6) Loses the time if power goes out. Our cheapo Wharfedale would keep the time for hours/days. The LG - if power is off for more then a few minutes, all your times go too. That means all your timed recordings don't happen. The timed recordings remain but without you setting the time and date, they won't activate.
For a recorder that was not cheap, this device has been a serious disappointment. We are now back to our Wharfedale that is limping along. We will get this repaired once we get our LG back from Makro. Then we will be selling our LG. LG, this product is an embarrassment to you guys.

I've got a LG RH399H for 6 months now and have no problems with it.
Hi Guys I need help. I bought an LG dvd recorder RH399H but I can not timer record on it. When I try to timer record I get a message Try channel setup first. When I auto progam it does not find a channel. How do I get around this. I am technically challenged, so please simple steps will be appreicated. thanks

As I recall, you have to go to SetUp and then AutoProgramming. Did you read the instruction book?

By default, when the unit is first powered on (or after a power cut), it will be on the built-in tuner input.
You have to set up the tuner first, if you are going to record via this. If you have DSTV connected via RCA/Composite, then you will need to hit the button on your remote marked "Input" - this will cycle the input channel from the tuner to AV1, then AV2, etc.
If you do not tune the recorder channels via RF (VHF/UHF aerial; not satellite dish) then you will not be able to record via the tuner.
If you connect DSTV, DVD player, CD player, etc. through the recorder, then each of these would be connected via the individual input numbers, as located next to each input plug set.
Thanks Howardb what you say make sense. The DSTV is connected via the recorder. When I press ''Input"" I get dstv chanel picture on AV1, grey screen on AV2, "snow" on PR01. It appears that auto tuning is reading the PR 01 and I gather this is the one you want me to tune. Do I need a seperate arial in order to tune the recorder channels via RF?

Correct Tubby. I used to have a UHF and VHF aerial before DSTV, and this just plugged straight into the RF-In of the recorder - this will only tune SABC 1,2,3 and eTV though. You can also try running an RF co-ax cable from the RF-Out of your DSTV decoder to the RF-In of your recorder, the try tuning when the input is set to PR01.
I currently do all my recording via the DSTV decoder channels, as I never watch SABC 1,2,3, eTV...
Dude, you are my hero! Thank you, thank you, thank you. I happen to have an old arial as well. I then auto tuned. Then when I went to timer record, I had the options of AV1 etc. I managed to timer record and it is working. Thanks so much
