After reading all the messages in this thread I just realised that my RH399H does not have a USB port at the front. I checked in the manual and it shows place to connect camcorder and also other connection points. Mine just has 4 buttons for stop, pause and whatever. Have I been ripped off?

Thank you, thank you, thank you. Option 2 worked great.

NP :D

Could you post a photo of your actual model, front and back? What is the model number printed on the back/base of the unit?
When I bought my RH1999H a few years back, I recall there being 2 of the same model numbers - after a bit of investigation with LG, I found out that there was an "older" model which was a bit outdated, and a "newer" model which was the one I wanted. Not sure if it's the same with the RH399H, but I found that different stores seemed to stock the same model number, but they looked very very different... and the features seemed different too.
I don't understand the logic of this, but that's how it goes *shrug*

RH399H

I got hold of a techie in the service dept at LG. He said he did not have one at hand so that he could look at it to tell me anything. I thought this a good sign if they don't have any for repair! Anyway he said that some models have a flap that is practically invisible and you have to pull down the flap. I found the flap at the front on the left hand side (nothing like the manual shows). I have opened it and there is nothing that looks to me like a USB port. There is a long grey thing sitting there horizontally and perhaps I have to remove that??? I am going to phone the store where I bought it and hear what they say.

Okay, I am an idiot. That flap is where the CD drive is! still haven't found the USB port but at the back is something called HDMI output which I assume stands for hard drive????

Thanks, Howard, I am just trying other options before taking photos. I went up the road to a guy who also has a RH3999H. His is like the one in the picture in the manual and he bought his some months ago. Mine has a date on the bar code that says September 2008 so he thinks mine is a newer model. He is coming here just now to see if he can find my USB port - I mean by recorder's DVD port. LOL I couldn't get through to the store where I bought it - engaged all the time. Maybe lots of people phoning in looking for USB ports!

Hey Lizard. HDMI is your video/audio digital output - not hard drive related...

On back model number is RH399H. Serial number is 809INYD169210.

Does your model look like this:

Does the front panel have these inputs/connections behind the panel (full manual here 2MB) :

Yes, like pics 1 and 2. Looking at http://techie.mine.nu/temp/RH399H3.jpg. does it mean that the items marked 12, 13 and 14 are UNDERNEATH or BEHIND the items marked 7, 8, 9, 10, 11? If so, I cannot work out HOW TO GET TO THEM. I hope you are not falling of your chair laughing. Bear with me please. Thanks for your patience.

From what I can see, the items marked 12, 13 and 14 are UNDERNEATH the items marked 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 - they should be behind a cover flap that opens -- check the right hand side of the unit when you look at it from the front, there should be a cover or flap that can open by pulling lightly on the right side edge of the flap - it should open towards you and downwards.
Have a look at my LG1999 front flap here:

Eureka! I found it. Thank you so much. Phew! That was a battle.
Now please tell me the next thing which may be a bit simpler. If I play a DVD in the recorder, is it possible to record it to the hard drive? It would seem not, perhaps because it is protected. But if I hook up my old DVD player to the recorder and play the DVD in that, would it then be possible to record it with the recorder? And, in similar vein, if I hook up my old VCR to the recorder, will I be able to record from that?
I have taken some DVDs from the library of an old series of Touch of Frost. They have to be retured by Monday and I had hoped to put them on the hard drive for future viewing.

I don't think they'll copy directly to your RH399 - try though.
You can also try copying them from the DVD player to the RH399, just depends on the type of copy protection on the DVD - may not work, and will also take a loooong time. I would copy them to a PC HDD using AnyDVD & DVD Shrink and then transfer via USB stick at a later stage if you wish.

Hooking up the VHS is no problem - use RCA cables and you're good to go - you can record directly to the HDD.

It is a very simple matter to change the HDD on your dvd recorder... naturally tho you will lose any information you have on the old and new disks, so I would HIGHLY advise backing up to dvd or something suitable.

The DVD recorders take IDE drives and they're currently up to just over 1TB, so more space is not a problem...

Just please bear in mind that changing the hard drive will most definitely invalidate your warranty...

The RH399H is a wonderful unit, although the performance of the front USB port is a downer, being only USB 1.1, but it can still play movies, music and pictures from the USB port, it just takes a while to get going.

I've had mine since july and have thrown 90% of the movies on my pc onto it and there's still like 200GB free... so the drive is more than capable.

The device also has the quickest startup of the one's i've seen, my dad's one take just over 6 minutes from pressing the button to usable.... whereas mine does the same thing in under 2 minutes...

All they are really missing from these devices is Ethernet or WLAN capability...

Hi, I see you speak of PC to DVD Recorder "uploading" which you say works. What about the other way around, i.e Dubbing from the DVD Recorder HDD to a DVD and then being able to read the dubbed DVD on a PC. I have dubbed a number of things that I had recorded on the HDD onto DVD, with a view to editing them or watching them on my PC. Unfortunately, my laptop does not even recognise the fomat on the disc and can't even show that there is something recorded on the disc, when I place the dubbed disc in my PC.

Is there a trick that I am missing? I dubbed the programmes using the SP option and didn't change any settings. Should I be changing settings so that dubbing occurrs in DivX or some other format recognisable by PC's? Any idea where I can get help on this?

For the DVD to be read in a PC DVD-Rom, the DVD disc has to be finalised - if it's left open, the PC won't read it. On the disc menu, there should be an option for this - will check the manual when I get home later tonight for you.

Hey. I have bought me a RH399. Yesterday I tried a Verbatim DVD+R Dual Layer as the manual suggests it only supports +R DL, but it seems it doesn't recognise verbatim. The manual suggests a Mitsubishi DVD+R DL. Now a couple of questions?

Which other DL dvd can this thing write to?
Where can I get mitsubishi +R DL?
Who has tried other brands DL? anyone else also try a verbatim?

399H LG HHD Recorder

Hi All

I've just bought an LG 399H recorder and already I have buyer's regret. I like to keep the 6hr timeshift buffer switched on. However, I realised that when I enter the menus by pressing the home button, or if a timer recording starts, everything that was in the 6hr buffer is dumped never to be seen again. Is this normal??? I used to own a Philips 3570H recorder and it worked wonderfully. The buffer memory remained in tack during timer recordings and when entering the menus. Unfortunately the HDD on Philips crashed a week ago, and now I can't find a Philips recorder anywhere!!! :o

Any comments!

This is interesting because I have had my recorder for about a year and use it a lot but I don't know what a 6hr timeshift buffer is! I am sure I have never seen mention of such a thing in the instruction book either. I will be watching to see if others are more knowledgeable.
