Hi guys

Thanks for your help with migrating my emails from PC to Mac. Worked like a dream with o2m.

So, the next problem I encountered was this: region codes on the macbook pro internal dvd player. I have a huge dvd collection, and probably only about 40% of it is region 2. The thing told me I get 5 chances to change the code. What will happen then? Can I get it unlocked again? Is there something else I can use to play dvd's on it? I know of anydvd for the PC, not sure if there is something similar for the Mac?

Otherwise, I guess I can get an external player, but that would kind of defeat the purpose...

once its locked thats it....even if u remove the drive and put it in another machine its locked.....i have heard some rumours about unlocking it, but yet to see it.
dvdregionfree for mac works.

wow sorry to hear buddy that sux... o this is the mac sub-forum sorry guys wrong place.

Search for something called "UJ-857 HBEA region free firmware"
This used to work on the UJ-857 DVD devices, the old Macbook/MB Pro's have these drives.
Warning:
Using this software firmware updater may render your warranty invalid.

i think ben 10 is on soon.,run along now, tell ur friends how u pwned this noob with ur l33tness....

I also thought so but was not sure, and have no way to test....
I would try this option first, and just set all dvd's to be opened by vlc automatically

I still have an Apple branded DVD-ROM/CDRW lying round that I'll test it on when I get my new Mac (whenever that might be).

It depends on what sort of hardware DVD-burner you possess. My Mac Pro came with an RPC-2 (region locked) SONY DVD-Drive/Burner. I flashed it finding the firmware for it on one of the usual websites (www.rpc1.org) and
since then have enjoyed an RPC-1 NEC DVD-R/+R/+RW/+RAM drive. No worries. On the other hand my Panasonic Windows XP laptop (which retails for $3,000 USD) has no region free firmware and there is no program which can bypass the strict check the Japanese made drive uses to access DVD-Video data. In other words it all depends. If you're lucky you'll be able to watch DVD-Region free movies on your Mac by flashing it and then using a player like VLC OR you won't be able to flash your drive in which case Bootcamp and or VMWare Fusion and AnyDVDHD/Fengtao's DVDIdle may help you OR if you're really unlucky and own one of the best Windows laptops out there eg a Panasonic Toughbook there is nothing available on this earth to make Panasonic drives region free, neither flashing nor using AnyDVDHD or DVDIdle will work. In other words -- this is not a Windows vs Mac issue but an issue of hardware drives and whether their region firmware has been hacked or not (Or if it's even possible in which
case as with my Laptop I can only watch Region 1 movies on it), although I have half a dozen RPC-1 DVD-Drives here (some region free from the factory) I could rip the non Region-1 DVDs with and make region-free identical 1:1 copies.

Try VLC media player. I believe it ignores the region coding.

It can't bypass RPC-2 drives though. The drive runs it's own internal routine to make sure the disk matches it's own region and if not, it won't play. Software like AnyDVD use alternative means of accessing DVD-Video data on a video DVD, ie they force the player to read it as a Data-DVD and that works in most cases of RPC-2 (Region locked) drives. Some drives refuse to do this, eg
Panasonic drives and there is no way to make them region free. The Amazing hackers at AnyDVD are not amazing enough to hack that, in fact any maker could make his DVD-Drive RPC-2 with AnyDVD failing if they chose to implement this method. Only Panasonic is running this method though, at present.
