The funny thing is that 20 years ago they had a machine like this at Northclif Corner and and it eventually disappeared.

Maybe it was ahead of its time, or maybe this idea is just stupid to start with, especially with web based and Video on demand systems coming to the fore.

They used to have a DVD vending machine at the Engen in Pinelands... think I was the only one that used it... everything was always in... I generally used it o the way home from a club at 4am..

I don't know, it might be useful, if they pop all over the place. Easier than going to a video shop to get the dvd and then the next again to return it. The problem with web based movies, and video on demand, are the bandwidth constraints as well as DRM issues (less of an issue if you're renting as opposed to buying, but might still be difficult to ensure full compatability with a wide range of systems).
 
Be on the lookout for the bunch of guys on the streetcorner selling bombed DVD kiosk disc's since their pirated stuff was confiscated...:p

Bombing stationary objects containing money etc.. was still a truly South African sport last time I checked...:D
 
The company I worked for 2 years ago launched the same concept but nobody bought into it. It was called DVD 24/7. A couple of Engen stores took them on pilot but no one else would. Apparently you need to be an international player to launch new concepts in this country.
 
the dvd vending machines are all over the place in supermarkets in the US - but they're kinda overpriced, compared to the 'regular' vid stores - they tap in to the impulse lazy shoppers, I guess, who dont want to make another stop at a vid store before going home..

Japan got to the vending machine craze a loooong time ago - you can get anything you can imagine, from Japanese vending machines, from clothing, to sex toys, to drinks, to movies, food etc etc (do a search on 'Japanese vending machines')

Yes they are

This vending machine has truly bizarre contents... 'used' schoolgirl panties! We had heard that such machines existed but had never seen them. A colleague came across this machine in suburban Tokyo just recently (May 2002). This particular machine is a converted cigarette machine that now takes 10,000 yen notes (about US$80 bills). The current contents run from 1000 to 3000 yen

I signed up the day after this launched (new Hazeldean centre, close to Silver Lakes). (Saw the inside of the jukebox - its pretty cool.)

It works on a prepaid system, with a minimum R100 (I think) charge/recharge. Movie prices depend on how soon you return the disk.
< 6h = R15
<18h = R23

My biggest gripe is that the website for online reservations was supposed to launch "by Wednesday", then "by the end of next week", and those dates were both in October...

The disk cover (a flat, square blue box) has a round hole through which the barcode stuck on the centre of each DVD can be read. I imagine if you return a blank DVD with the same barcode, they'll find out sooner or later, and bill your credit card (required for sign-up).
