Hi,

I have an LG DVD Rom that I was ripping a cd (a cd I bought) onto my pc and around track 5 or 6 it made an awful noise, like it was falling apart!! :( :(

As I took out the cd it had scratches all over (2mm in width), afterwards I used the DVD Rom for installing software/games ect. But never again for ripping.

Now I want to rip my Parlatones onto my pc, but am to scared to try! :( Any idea what caused that initial problem.

P.S.
Was a local artist's cd, had no copy protection on.
There was no power dip or surge (I had a UPS connected)
CD was entered correctly as it only gave a problem half way through.

Thanks :)

My old Lite-On drive did this once, took me a while to realize it was happening to a few cds. Then one week the drive destroyed a disc of mine.

I say if its scratching discs REPLACE the drive. Not worth having a drive that scratches discs and probably will end up destroying its self eventually.

I had this once with a PS2, evidently the laser was moving too close to the CD while it was spinning and scratching it...

Same thing happened with a cd or 2 of mine .... was gonna replace the drive but was then informed that the problem more than likely lay with the cd. Some discs are just kark bru ... luck of the draw and all that :o

If the drive is still under warranty, take it back to the shop and try get a replacement.

While ripping or installing as well?

Nope, while it was under warranty I took it in 11 times! Repaired it 5 times and replaced it the other 6 times. This was when DVD writer just came out, was still like R500 one!

it seems to be a common problem with the lg drives. I had 2 give me the same problem. Just buy new one or get current one replaced if under warrantee.

One of mine started 'ringing' the top of my dvd's. I was pissed off cos it damaged my crysis disc.

I once had a CD burst into tons off pieces at a customer. After a while we figured it was faulty batch of CD's and not the drive ;) The drive still worked with other CD's :)
