DVDs just a click away

I am very happy with these guys, the only problem is that you cant choose in what order the dvds must be delivered...

A few questions:
- When I want to watch a DVD I want to watch it now. I can't see the point of ordering it and then waiting 2 days.
- If they deliver it to you door, what happens for working people. Who signs for it?
- How do they handle our 'fantastic' postal system where parcels get routed via Gaberone.
- If I have to drive to the local spar to drop it off, I might as well stop at the DVD shop for a movie, as its on route :)

Seems too expensive. For example I just ordered the entire Doc Martin Boxset from Take2 for R210 - BOTH Seasons. Also their selection sucks, they throw words like "Arthouse" and "Manga" around - I don't know what manga is - it's anime DVD - but anyway under Polanski they only have 3 movies including Oliver Twist which isn't exactly ARTHOUSE plus Chinatown and The Pianist (other 2) are available at Musica - which is near to where I buy groceries. SO all in all, price is EXPENSIVE, selection is POOR and there are WAITING times. For a little more you can BUY the DVD and own it FOREVER, have a selection of over 1-2 million DVDs from ALL the regions of the world and not worry about having to return the item afterwards. I guess this would work on people who really don't watch good 'arthouse' directors or just don't have the time to go browse in their local DVD store.

I'm a movie fan and when I want something like DANTON or Nobody Knows or even Lem's Hospital of Change, I'll just click on the relevant overseas DVD store OR Take2 and get it that way. You'll miss so much good stuff if PP is your only source of 'arthouse'.

talking of late return fees, I was once charged R74 for being 1 day late with 2 DVD's.

as you can imagine, I have never been back there again!!

I believe in a 24hour rule. I was fined R100 for 4 dvd's ad the Video King in Lynnwood because I returned them 2 hours after penalty time.

What makes their rule so sickening is, if you rent a movie in the morning at say, 10am, you have to have it back the next morning by 11am. That gives you grace of 25 hours.

If you rent a movie just before closing time at 9pm you still have to have the movie back by 11am. That gives you a usage period of 14 hours give or take.

This fine system is computerized. My logic tells me that if they are using computers anyway, then they should have a 24 hour usage period based on a starting time at the time of payment.

That would be fair.

The last time I rented a DVD I was also charged R50 for late fees. Needless to say I never paid it and I never went back, and to think I used to rent on a regular basis.

When can we have online delivery, that's how it should be.

blah blah blah For a little more you can BUY the DVD and own it FOREVER, have a selection of over 1-2 million DVDs from ALL the regions of the world and not worry about having to return the item afterwards blah blah blah

for a little more than what?
R108?
OOOOHH LOOOK - I GOT 1 DVD!!!!!
I think I'll watch it ... um .. 20 times this month!!
And then I can buy another! YAY!

If you actually bother to READ what they HAVE on their SITE then you WOULD have NOTICED that IF they DO not have what you ARE LOOKING for then YOU can request IT.

The only downside is the return part but, that said, I usually drop mine off on a monday afternoon and have my next set by lunchtime on wednesday - so no complaints there.

I think I've said this before, but here I go again :o

I like this model, because I don't have to stop off at a video shop to get the dvd, and then again before 12 the next day to return it.

But I don't watch videos very often, maybe one or two a month, so paying a monthly fee doesn't work for me. What I want is the old video shop contract model - I'll pay for 12-movie contract, and I'll tell them when I want one sent. They then send the dvd, and subtract one from my contract.

Of course this probably isn't cost effective for them - like gyms, they rely on people signing up and then not using it to its full capacity. But the current system isn't cost effective for me!

There's a similar service called BigPix. They've just launched in Pretoria but they've been operating in Natal for quite a while. I gave the free trial a go and it worked fairly well but they do still have some kinks to work out with the post office.

I recon the PO is the problem here, where as in the UK, you rent it, it comes in your postbox and then you post it back (prepaid) and you can keep it as long as you like.

For R89 a month, customers can rent one DVD at a time, for R109 two at a time, for R139 three at a time, for R179 four at a time and R239 secures five DVDs at any one time.
so 1 dvd, then return it ,so it takes say 3days to get and return a dvd which means you can see about 10dvd a month? dvd at shop is about R20 on average

no return boxes

I wanted to join but was told that they did not have any return boxes in my area (Constantia Kloof, Allens Nek etc), so it looks like I might just use the competition:sick:
