Can any of you confirm that this is the correct thing to buy enabling one to use one of the newer flat screens in an older Pentium 4.

I had a look at one today (approx. R80) & could not picture it fitting into the back of the PC - checking now, I have 2 connector's available (sticking out the back of the PC) - one 9-pin ('male') and one 25-pin ('female').

Judging by the fact that the converter wasn't that big, I presume one side will fit into the 9-pin, and the other will be suitable for the plug from the screen.

Am I correct in my assumptions, not having either with me to check ? Or would I need something else, in addition to the converter ?

I'm sure your P4 would have a VGA output, and perhaps DVI from a graphics card if you have one fitted.
All you would need would be a regular VGA cable.

Thanks for posting these, but my computer seems to have neither. I think it'll be safest for me to take the PC box in when I buy the converter / screen so they can see what (else) might be required.
Rgds.

What monitor cable are you currently using? It should be plugged into the VGA (blue) plug at the back of your PC.

if the pc has a vga onboard or gpu, then yes the converter is the correct one be warned you need to make sure that the converter is the correct way around. Yes you do get vga>dvi & dvi>vga converters. If vga on pc then you need vga >dvi converter.

Don't want to unplug it now, as I won't be able to use the screen & correspond. Can confirm it is a blue plug going into the back of the comp. However, in the past when I've asked salespeople in comp. shops, they've mentioned having to put in a new graphics card (around R400), so they likely figure the VGA plug in an older P4 won't be compatible. Therefore, I think I'd need to take it in to confirm what's reqd., exactly.

Thx. - even better, I'll take a photo of the back of the box & that should be sufficient for them to help out - just don't want to be duped into getting something that's not reqd.

What sockets does your LCD monitor have? Either white (DVI) or blue (VGA) or white and blue?

If there is blue socket then you do not need an adapter.

If possible post pics of both the monitor socket and the back of your PC here.

You do not need to buy a graphics card. That is sales talk. The converter you need is approx 2cm(dont have one by me to measure right now) the other is almost double that length.

Thx. Sting & ChilliGirl for your latest comments - camera's in another room I don't have access to at the moment so can't post pics. - sorry.
Plug is blue, so here's hoping. Monitor / Screen is one of the older CRT screens (surely that's not be LCD(?), but fitting is blue, not white) - screen is 5 years old.

''The converter you need is approx 2cm'' - if memory serves me correctly, I think it was about that size, or at least, one side (fitting) was that size, and the other a bit bigger.

Not to worry - you've all give me enough info. to consolidate & use when I next get to a comp. shop.
Rgds.

No problem at all as I knew what you need. I've sold plenty of those. Just remember the ancient mice on the P2 & 3's used 9pin serial. VGA has 15pins.
:)

Besides I get cheesed off at sales people that try sell what's not needed.

Ditto. Plenty of shysters out there! I have the DVI male to VGA female adaptor in front of me...

:p Great!

That you use with an old monitor to DVI on the GPU.

Sadly some of the newer monitors only come with DVI cable & not the VGA anymore. A bit silly I think.

This is all getting very  (confusing) for me - think I'll go floss my teeth & go to sleep.

I better apologise now inbetween work(busy with) & being tired I got a lil confused. It's the longer adaptor you'll need.

You can copy that pic & paste it to word. Then print it & take it with you. Then ask for that adaptor. What is the most important is which are the male & which are the female sides. It was at least the right pic :p
You need VGAmale to DVIfemale.

@ BCR - did you come right?

Hi Sting - thanks for checking up ; sorry I missed it for a few days.
I'd been checking ''today's posts'' for a while after the weekend & only checked ''PC Hardware'' now, going back further than I'd anticipated.

Was at Makro late last week, and they had stock of a converter but I wasn't convinced it was 100%.
I went back to an independent shop, Fri. a.m. , and a helpful salesperson showed me 2 options, one's just the converter & other has cable attached.

He said best option would be to buy the monitor first, as it should include a cable that will / might fit without having to buy a converter, even in a Pentium 4 -
I've got my mind set on a Samsung, would like a 20'' @ 50000:1 (
saw that @ Makro, and clarity good enough for me).

He said I shouldn't go for more than 20'', or even not as much as that, as the picture would either be stretched or it'd have a line appearing on top of pic. (much like Dstv in 'pillarbox' mode on a 54cm screen, 'specially BBC World News).
Also stated I might need to d/load an updated driver for M/Board, as my resolution settings might not be enough. Currently set @ 1024 x 768, but settings can go up to 1280 x 1024 (32 bit).

As I'm a novice in all these things, I'm merely repeating what was said - will be on the lookout for specials, buy an appropriate monitor, and either 'force' it to work out, or will keep it for when PC is upgraded.

Probably won't be looking again at forum 'til Sunday, so should you reply, I'll respond then if necessary.
Rgds.
