E-Rate for schools a joke

More than seven years after the Communications Ministry announced the introduction of a special “e-rate” for schools that would halve the cost of their Internet calls, a reply to a parliamentary question shows that not a single public school, and only nine Further Education and Training (FET) colleges, have so far benefited from this promise

no surprises there. I was involved in submitting to the RFP 6 years ago, not one company that responded were given any sort of answers...
part of the "e-rate" was also to supply "all schools" with pc's before 2010. not one RFP was even read through as far as I know.

I for one find it shocking that a Mintyguava initiative failed so dismally. Service delivery is up the pipe, what were the chances of the schools getting internet cheap? Besides the additional problem of most of them not having PCs in the first place. Not to mention the schools where the teachers are drunk/absent.

same as the one where they were given 500 million for internet for 250 schools and haven't delivered one year later - set up BEE company, tender, get paid and squander funds... what's new?

Heading says 8 schools???

a reply to a parliamentary question shows that not a single public school, and only nine Further Education and Training (FET) colleges, have so far benefited from this promise,” the DA said.

I personally filled in our school's application about 2 years ago. Haven't heard a word since.

Not surprising.

Probably the application got lost in a storeroom somewhere...

It is easier sitting on your backside doing sweet f-all if there's nobody to control the progress of the work done...

Problem is... even 50% of the going rate in SA is way too expensive.

As for the ISP, arent they suppose to do some charity work here?

MyADSL can ask couple of ISP's to sponsor internet connection to some of the schools

Educated people dont fall for election promises, threatening the elite's golden egg laying goose.

Lots of schools have link ( assume ADSL ) cos they use it to submit pupil data.

schools are cautious to give pupils net access cos they cant control its use.

My old high school uses iBurst to connect to the net, but they will be changing to adsl next year. iBurst is just too pricy for them, and with 600 or so pupils, data usage is going to be a problem.

We use ADSL here at my current job, but it's unlikely the school could get this discount anyway, as we are a private school.

I once read that a school could apply, if they were using dial up. No mention of ADSL or another form of connectivity. Honestly, schools should get the discount, no matter what system they use, just like they should get a discount for the landlines.

600 pupils?
HU?
Damn man, I thought every school was teaching at least 1500 pupils.

Anyways, it's up to the schools to chase this issue, and, they're failing, so it's now up to the Department of Education, and that's where the problem lies.
Is that the minister of Education eating dem donuts wif Ivy?

I know this is going to be blasted like a mofo again because everyone wants a free ride and a free party with lots of free stuff like hats and tshirts and crap.

But I feel this could be a perfect opportunity for myBB to use the community fund in sponsoring free bandwidth to schools. Perhaps even lobby then (by this example) to big ISP's to start complying with the law set out. And start a "proudly south african" type group which they can belong to once they proved that all schools who purchase bandwidth from them get this discount.

I know this won't be viable for the ISP's to do, but this will make a big stink in the news paper based off of Telkom being the only one (the government owned entity) not complying with this rule and ISP's out of their own good will including this website sponsoring this to help the nation of retards to become more educated.

Health, Education and Security has made it so this country can't get a foot up on it's 3rd world status. If we can provide an example JUST for education. The rest should follow.

AcidRaZor for president.
I heartily second the motion, but would like to amend it slightly and say that we pay a legal resource to get a single school up and running with teklom and e-rate and publish the entire process once it's done, so that other schools can follow suit easily.
