E TOLL roadblocks continue

I saw last Friday they were doing the same at Botha avenue in Centurion. It was police vehicles, the E-Toll vans at both sides of the highway off-ramp/on-ramps.

I asked whether they would mind if I record their conversation with me using my phone and was answered with a silent staredown, after which I was told to go.

The one I saw was Sanral E-Toll vans, police and JMPD mobile court. :sick:
It is a standard JPMD random pullover type setup, check licencing etc, together with eToll Staff apparantly "checking" your outstanding eToll account and bullying about missing eTags. The eToll guy didn't get 2 sentences in with me before I got waved off so I cannot confirm the latter.

Is it illegal to take photos/video of police offers in SA? I know in certain countries in Europe and certain states in the US it is illegal - not sure about SA though - can anyone answer?

Very much doubt it is illegal. The police will have a frothy of course, especially if they're doing something even vaguely "illegal"

Nope, not illegal as long as it doesn't interfere with their duties.

Now, as to whether they are going to be happy about it, and not harass you... that is entirely another matter.

Should then be quite easy to take video footage and photos and if it escalates let them arrest you. This would then constitute wrongful arrest (and they probably will also fail to follow any procedure as part of this). The ICD and lawyers will then have a field day. Pity I never travel those routes - would have had a GoPro strapped to my head just for that purpose :whistle:

I saw one yesterday on Allandale on-ramp.
Same setup. Police vehicles and 2 etoll vans.

When they pull you over, only speak to properly uniformed police officers and then only about normal road offences and compliance.
You can safely tell him that you are not willing to answer any questions related to e-tolling and that he is welcome to send you correspondence (preferably registered mail) on the matter if he has questions.

I wasn't trying to record the JMPD officer, who was very polite, curiously. When he was finished with his check the eToll guy stepped up and started with his "why doesn't your vehicle have an eTag" business, to which I replied:
"Just wait a minute, I want to record this encounter and post it on YouTube later"
"..why?"
"Okay, it is recording, you can go"
<stare>
<pretending to record, smirking>
"You may go"

I was stopped there yesterday on my bike. They just check your id/license and the e-toll guys run your number plate through their system. The guy told me I racked up over R2000 in outstanding bills, told him I'll pay it later xD.

Report it. They are not allowed to discuss ANYTHING eTolls with you

Did you have plates on? Did they check if it was fixed properly to the bike and all that jazz?
